Leafs Acquire Ryan Hollweg
Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the team has obtained left-winger Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers. In exchange, the Rangers will receive Pittsburgh’s fifth-round pick in 2009 which was previously acquired by Toronto in the Hal Gill trade on February 26, 2008.
Hollweg, 25, scored two goals and added two assists to go along with 96 penalty minutes (third on the team) in 70 games for the Rangers in 2007-08. He dressed for eight of New York’s 10 playoff games in 2008. Hollweg was an integral member of the 2003-04 Medicine Hat Tigers as they captured the Western Hockey League Championship and advanced to the Memorial Cup. The native of Downey, California was originally the Rangers’ eighth round choice, 238th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Not a surprise since they signed Voros. Hollweg's days were numbered.

With the acquisitions of Jeff Finger, and now Ryan Hollweg, look for Toronto to make a serious run at the cup this year!

Hollweg was a energy guy who used the body effectively and certainly got involved in some very entertaining moments in Ranger lore. Certainly wasn't a very good scrapper and did have a brain fart or two which occasionally cost the Rangers but he did fight and that is what counts. A change of scenery would do him well considering the microscope he was suddenly under here in the big city lights. Good luck to him in Toronto.

If Hollweg reverts to his 06-07 form that got him on the NHL's "Hit to Hurt" list, then he'll be a good acquisition. Last year though, having a whopping 6 fights (3 against the likes of Dowd, McCarthy and Carter) and rarely throwing the body except for a boarding major here and there, is what lost him his spot and got him out of NY. Hollweg cannot play scared, which he has since the Simon incident, and if he does this year in the NHL will be his last, maybe he'll be a heavyweight in the KHL or something.
