Lacrosse Team Signs Garrett Burnett to Practice Roster

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Arizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced Thursday that he has signed former National Hockey League player Garrett Burnett, as well as goaltender Cole Murray, to the Sting’s Practice Roster. The Sting also announced the release of defenseman Jon Niziol.

Burnett played 39 games for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 2003-04, registering 1G-2A-3P-184PIM. He began the 2005-06 hockey season with the NHL’s Dallas Stars prior to playing 10 games for the American Hockey League’s Iowa Stars and 29 for the ECHL’s Phoenix Roadrunners. A native of Coquitlam, British Columbia, Burnett was at one time a teammate of Sting Captain Peter Lough on the Burnaby Lakers of the BCJLA. The 6’3” 236-lb. defender also played box lacrosse at the senior level for the Western Lacrosse Association’s Coquitlam Adanacs in 1998.

In 1999-2000, as a member of the AHL’s Kentucky Thoroughblades, Burnett spent 506 minutes in the penalty box in only 58 games played. Only Dennis Bonvie has had more PIMs (522 in 73 GP for the Hamilton Bulldogs in 1996-97) in a single season in the history of the AHL.

Cole Murray was on Arizona’s Practice Roster last season. He played last summer alongside Sting defender Scott Self on the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Peterborough Lakers where he registered a G.A.A. of 9.03 while backing up NLL All-Star Pat O’Toole.

The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Currently in their third season of existence, the Sting are the defending NLL West Division Champions. For more information, visit ArizonaSting.com.

Haha, wow. Lax is a great sport, and he will probably be a way better fighter in it than the NHL, seeing has he falls so fricken much. I hope he does get some games in, good luck Garrett.

What about Brian McGrattan?

It's too bad he leaves the ECHL.
Last time he fought was March 3rd in Idaho.
What made him leave hockey now?

Surely, when bringing up that stat, he must have known or been able to find out, about Brian's 551 in 04-05?

It's a release from the team.

Perhaps they meant "at the time", meaning as of 99-00.

"Regular" Eurosport or Eurosport2? Saw my first game a couple of weeks ago and must say it's an enticing sport!

Obviously they must allow fighting in the league. Are there rules such as 2 or 3 fights your out of the game? Can someone link me to a website for this? I know very little of lacrosse but with hockey being so bad now it would be really great to find something else for entertainment!
That's a good choice taking Burnett, he's a pretty big name to us "fight fans" and if they're trying to sell the sport as rough and tumble he is a step in the right direction.

NLL has some pretty entertaining fights, have never seen a guy get more than 2 fights in a game so not sure on the number it takes to get tossed. Its rough and tough, makes the NHL look like ballet.

NHL is the most exiting sport out there. Sure i miss fighting and hitting but actually i don't it has changed that much. The game is faster now and i love not have to see all the hooking all the time. But the grit is gone and that is the most sad thing. But i won't trade NHL and hockey for any other sport
