Kings Re-Sign Dustin Penner

LOS ANGELES – The 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings have agreed to terms on a new one-year contract with left wing Dustin Penner, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Penner, 29, joins both Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser as key Kings unrestricted free agents who agreed to terms on new deals with the Kings shortly after leading the franchise to its first-ever Stanley Cup Championship in June.

Penner, a 6-4, 242-pound native of Winkler, Manitoba, appeared in all 20 postseason games for the Kings during the 2012 playoffs. He collected 11 points (3-8=11), 32 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating in the 20 games and two of the three goals he scored were game-winners. His overtime goal at Phoenix in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals (May 22) sent the Kings to the 2012 Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings acquired Penner from Edmonton for Colten Teubert, a first-round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional third-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft on Feb. 28, 2011.

Penner, who scored a career-high 32 goals in 2009-10 and four times has scored 20 or more goals during his NHL career, has 262 points (135-127=262) and 306 penalty minutes in 489 career regular season games with the Kings, Oilers and Anaheim Ducks. In 60 career playoff games, he has 30 points (10-20=30), 50 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating.

Penner opened his NHL career with Anaheim as he signed with the Ducks as a free agent on May 12, 2004. He was a member of the Ducks team that won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

That's exactly what I'm saying - he played great in the playoffs. Absolutely. He slept for 3 years before that. He did the same on his first contract.

You now get to experience the downside of Mr. Penner. He'll come to camp at 270 pounds and won't have a hit until Christmas. Enjoy

No, I got to enjoy that already.

But then Sutter came to town and didn't take his sh*t. He is either going to be in shape or they will sit his a$$ out. It's that simple. I also think the divorce helped him.

He was a part of why we won the cup this year, so I am glad the Kings resigned him. It was all worth it.

I hope you are right because he's actually a really good guy from what I can tell...

He's just so f*cking lazy for a big man it makes you want to kick him in the d*ck as a fan... I mean you saw it - he scored 9 goals in 84 games for the kings in the regular season (over two years) before he magically woke up in the playoffs and showed exactly how DOMINANT he can be if he actually wants to play. The guy is a truck...

I do hope you are right. The lazy Penner is enough to make you want to take your own life (or his).

one-year contract worth $3.25 million

Quote:
Dustin Penner has re-signed with the Kings on a one-year contract worth $3.25 million, meaning the Kings have the ability to return every piece of their Stanley Cup championship team. The re-signing of Penner, who made $4.25 million last season, still leaves the Kings some salary-cap room next season — more than $8 million — to make an addition, and the one-year contract leaves them flexibility in the following years.

From LA Kings Insider. Thats a little more than I wanted to spend on him, but at least it's only for 1 year if things go south. I am hopeful he will return to playoff form for the entire season, you cant underestimate how much office matters can effect a guys game. With all that gone I think he plays a good game.

I agree.. That is why he took a pay cut. It's just a one year deal and like I said, if he doesn't cut it, Sutter won't think twice sitting his a$$ in the press box.

The Kings can now dress the EXACT same lineup that won them the cup. You don't see that very often.
