Kings Add Dustin Penner From Edmonton

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired four-time 20-goal scorer forward Dustin Penner from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round draft pick in 2011 and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2012, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Penner, 28, has spent the last four seasons with Edmonton (2007-08 to present) where he’s compiled 186 points (93-93=186) and 189 penalty minutes in 304 games. In 63 games played this season he has 39 points (21-18=39) and 45 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound native of Winkler, Manitoba began his NHL career in 2005-06 with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, recording seven points (4-3=7) and 14 penalty minutes in 19 games. During his full season with the Ducks in 2006-07 Penner had 45 points (29-16=45) and 58 penalty minutes, helping Anaheim capture the Stanley Cup.

In 405 career NHL games with the Ducks and Oilers, Penner has accumulated 238 points (126-112=238) and 261 penalty minutes. In 34 career postseason games he has 17 points (6-11=17), 14 penalty minutes and a plus-14 rating.

Penner has scored 20-plus goals in four of his five full NHL seasons (2006-07, 2007-08, 2009-10 and 2010-11). He recorded a career high 32 goals, 31 assists and 63 points for Edmonton in 2009-10. Penner has played in all 82 regular season games three times in his career (2006-07, 2007-08 and 2009-10) and has missed only five games since 2006-07, his first full NHL season (386 of a possible 391 games). Penner was originally signed by the Ducks as an unrestricted free agent on May 12, 2004.

Teubert, 20, has spent this season with the American Hockey League’s Manchester Monarchs, posting 10 points (2-8=10) and 57 penalty minutes in 39 games. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound native of White Rock, British Columbia was originally drafted by the Kings in the first round (13th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

For Tueburt a 1st and either a 2/3rd in 2012.

Yikes, good pick up by LA. As a matter of fact a great pick up by LA.

Penner is lazy. When he feels like playing, he can but it's rare these days. Huge price IMO, loving this deal for Edmonton

Looks like a really good trade for the Oilers. Don't think Penner is worth that much.

Godly_goon 02-28-2011 02:29 PM

im happy

i wanted a move, and there werent many people i wanted leaving. the price is a bit steep but the kings NEEDED a top player without giving up the core. theres plenty of kids (esp dmen) in the system. they can afford this.

WOW, that was alot for Dustin Penner, feel that they over paid for him alot....

I agree, that is a lot for Penner. I think this could mean that Richards isn't going anywhere. One would think that type of package would be enough for Richards. Basically boils down to two first round picks and either a 2nd or 3rd. One of the firsts is a couple years into development.

I disagree. I think its a solid return to Edmonton, now having two pretty good 1st's this year and a former first in tueburt. But, I think Penner relies on his size and stregnth more than anything. He is a typical rebound goal type guy, that will park in front of the net. Something LA doesnt have.

I think his lack of play at times comes from playing for Edmonton. Given a strong up and coming team like LA, I think he will have more of a drive. I very well could be wrong, but thats what I see.

like i said im fine. kings pick up a top liner without giving up a roster player.

I know it's a bit of an overpayment... But... I am happy.. This is the guy I was hoping LA would get and they didn't give up any roster players. We have a ton of "D" prospects, so who cares. We got a left winger that can be tough to play against..

GCBC00 02-28-2011 02:35 PM

that was my first thought, but...

Definitely my first thought, but after looking at the #'s and the roster, including the minor league club, it might make sense for LA to have a 'vet' come in that has post season experience. With one more year left on Penner's contract, I thought he would have stayed, but again, LA could be looking at a decent post season, with some wins (obviously looking to have Dustin Penner chip in). Hope Penner has some gas left in the tank, time will tell...
