Kings Acquire Keaton Ellerby from Florida; Assign Andrew Campbell to Manchester (AHL)

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Kings have acquired defenseman Keaton Ellerby from Florida in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2013 NHL Draft and assigned defenseman Andrew Campbell to Manchester (AHL), Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Ellerby, 24, has played in 125 career NHL games (all with the Panthers), recording 17 points (2-15=17) and 70 penalty minutes. The 6-5, 217-pound native of Strathmore, Alberta was drafted by the Panthers in the first-round (10th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

This season, Ellerby has appeared in nine games with the Panthers, recording zero points and 36 penalty minutes. Ellerby is expected to join the team in Nashville and his jersey number has not been determined at this time.

The fifth-round selection traded to Florida is the same fifth-round selection acquired by the Kings from New Jersey in exchange for forward Andrei Loktionov on Wednesday, February 6.

Campbell, 25, was recalled by the Kings on February 6. The 6-4, 207-pound native of Caledonia, Ontario did not appear in a game.

That would explain why he was scratched last night.

Not bad, defense got exposed last night. Not having Mitchell's and Greene's big bodies back there is starting to take a toll.

Kind of early to give up on him already. He was a 10th overall pick and the Panthers only get a 5th round pick back...looks like the Kings won this trade.

For only a 5th round pick? I like this trade.

I would argue it was more or less bad drafting picking Ellerby that high. I was never that impressed with him in junior. Either way for a 5th round pick, he's worth the chance.

I agree. I also believe the Kings won the trade.

Hopefully they play him. Good pick up for Kings.

Good trade for both teams, in my opinion. LA gets a pretty good young d-man for cheap. He hasn't really panned out in Florida and has been passed up by Tyson Strachan, who has been playing better than Ellerby as of late. With Strachan passing him up on the depth chart and a lot of young prospects on their way, Ellerby was expendable.

It will be interesting to see how he does in LA.

The reason they recalled Campbell was because they weren't happy with the way the D was playing. hey wanted to give him a chance. I see Muzzin getting scratched tomorrow and Ellerby taking his spot. How long that lasts is another story.
