Jordan Staal Fined $2,500 for Boarding

NEW YORK - Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for boarding Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn during NHL Game No. 865 Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 9:56 of the second period. Staal received a minor penalty for boarding on the play.

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Obviously a dirty play, but he isn't a dirty player so I think the fine was about right. He knew he made a mistake as soon as he did it. Okay in my book.

...Awright, we get-it, already, Brendan! -- EVERY penalty gets an additional fine and suspension. No need for your dopey, asinine explanations. Just make sure ALL physical play is ELIMINATED in-time for the play-offs, so we have NOTHING but "shoot-out" hockey to look forward to.

Jordan not only saw his number but knew it was a dirty hit, as he checked on Coburn after the hit.

I thought he deserved a game or two.

A fine is acceptable - I am not a fan of hits from behind like that. It's one of the most dangerous plays in hockey and he is lucky he didn't injure Coburn.

he knew right away what he did. he acted like a little kid who threw a snowball at someone and hit em in the face. he knew he was wrong and checked on Coburn right away. What was horrible was Kimmo getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing for a 5 minute major. at least, thats the only penalty they could have called on Kimmo.

The refs were horrible, especially Auger. He called I think it was the first 8 penalties. Yet Devorski is putting out his fires.

One of the worst refed games I have ever seen in some time.

The reffing was atrocious. Those idiots should've been fired during the second period. Both teams were screwed by some terrible calls.

There's been large suspensions for the exact same thing. Staal isn't a dirty player and he felt bad right afterwards but he deserved a little more than a slap on the wrist. Maybe a game suspension would have been more fitting.

Jordan Staal Fined $2500 for boarding Flyers...

The fact that Staal didn't argue means he knows he was guilty. And I've seen hits less than that warrant 5 minute majors and suspensions. Whatever happened to Shannahan's videos? Maybe he'll put one out and explain why Staal gets fined and Marchand walks free.

The problem I see is Kimo standing there yapping instead of immediately going after Staal. Nice teammate Kimo..
I'm done with him after seeing that BS..

SO the rule must be; if you completely cheap shot a player, but then ask him if he's O.K., you don't get suspended? Yet Shanny will suspend others, who may not be labeled as Mr. Clean, for much less?

Peters only got 1-Game for cross-checking Backes in the head. Crazy stuff.

A bit surprising all around and I'm betting in the phone interview Staal probably cried and pleaded like a child for Shanahan not to give him a suspension.
