John Tortorella Fined for Comments After Winter Classic

NEW YORK - New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella has been fined for comments made following Monday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

"There is no acceptable explanation or excuse for commentary challenging the integrity of the League, its officials or its broadcast partners," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “People can disagree with calls by officials on the ice, but even in instances of the utmost frustration there is no justification for speaking as inappropriately and irresponsibly as Mr. Tortorella did.”

Why don't I believe him?

A fine for freedom of speech. Now I'm surprised Lavy wasn't fined for his comment about the Montreal refs on HBO.

Milbury went ape**** last night on vs(w/e its vs to me) saying JT should be "fined, and suspended," and etc etc! Milbury is a shill for NBC, anyways. What he said right or wrong, was awesome he spoke his mind and he shouldn't be punished for how he felt was a ****ed up 3rd. This is completely gay.

It's just like last year when Dean Lombardi got fined $50,000 for saying that the war room was intentionally blowing calls against the Kings because the guy didn't get the GM job. Then after the fine he said he didn't believe that and he shouldn't have said that. They obviously mean what they say they just don't want to make a bigger deal out of it.

He got fined for being right. Still, I cant remember a time when players and coaches didnt get in trouble for criticizing refs. Its ridiculous, but thats the way its always been.

Yup, it sounds like the NHL mafia payed Torts a visit in the morning when he still had sand in his eyes. They killed his dog, roughed him up and got the above comment on tape. Well done.

so from now on, just stand up after the game and praise the refs sarcastically? i can hear Torts now: "that penalty shot the ref called for....what a great call, i couldn't have done it better myself. i'm just disappointed Briere couldn't score on it, i mean how great would OT have been?"

"I do stand by my comments because they were spot on and everyone could see what was happening at the end of the game." Tortorella said. "Unfortunately I have to say the opposite because they can't see they're ruining the sport. With as gimmicky and cheesey as the people in charge of our game are now, it wouldn't shock me one bit if it came out that there's stuff like this going on or will go on in the future."

I thought this was the NHL!!!!! The highest level in professional hockey. The so called "INTEGRITY" of the game which Campbell refers to is in question by the embarrassing & disgraceful penalty calls made by the refs in a professional game being broadcast nationally. Those refs should be re-evaluated as professional refs.

All three of those calls were terrible. I can understand Torterella's frustration. Good for you John, stick up for the "INTEGRITY" of professional hockey, take the punishment & pay the fine.. The league already embarrassed themselves !!!!!!!

...He was only stating what a lot of people already think - everyone knows the network's love ideal scenarios and situations for important sporting events. The fine was inevitable, though,....the League WOULDN'T ALLOW him to getaway with saying THAT.
