John Tavares Fined for Slashing Zach Parise

NEW YORK – New York Islanders forward John Tavares has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slashing New Jersey forward Zach Parise in NHL Game No. 314 Friday afternoon on Long Island, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 3:51 of the second period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

I kind of find it funny that a play can go unpenalized by a crew of officials, yet receive a fine after the fact.

Whats the point of fining a guy who makes millions of dollars $2,500. The NHL must need some more money in that emergency fund, so they are replacing 2 minute minors with petty fines.

That was a gutless move by Tavares, if he had a beef with Parise he should have been a man and dropped the gloves.

So next time Tavares does something questionable he can be labled as a "repeat offender" I think $2,500 max on a fine needs to be rasied. The money taken away is pointless.

I've said the same thing before. It's ridiculous that with the money players make nowadays that they are still using a fine structure from the 1990s. It should be at least $10,000.
