I've been a Doug Wilson skeptic for the past few years because he consistently fails to address the big need- top veterans on defense. I gave him a pass lately for the solid signings of Thornton, Michalek, and Marleau. But my lack of god, didn't he learn anything from the Bill Guerin debacle? There are over-the-hill vets like Bryan Trottier who helped the Pens, and Ray Bourque and the Avs, but generally, this kind of guy just sucks up a roster spot that could be used by someone developing into a consistent player. So who gets bumped? Rissmiller? Pavelski? Grier? Brown? Smith? I'd much rather have either of these guys on the fourth line than Roenick. Yeah, thank goodness Wilson let Guerin get away, but then to get Roenick? Awful. Just awful.

1. Get Mark Smith on your roster. 2. Get Jeremy Roenick on your roster. 3. Get Jeremy Roenick for two years. Ergo, the Sharks lose. This is stupid.

JR not so hot anymore
I don't think that there is anyway in hell that JR will break Mike Modano's American born scoring record. JR is a great player a hall of famer for sure
but there is no way in HELL that he will score more goals in San Jose than Mike Modano will. San Jose is a grind-it-out type of team and he fits in as a grinder but not a goal scorer. He will be lucky if he scores 20+ goals this year and we all know that Mike will at least score 30+ if he stays healthy. |

Maybe he'll get his 500 goals then retire and save me and a lot of other people a lot of time complaining about him.

I dunno what JR has left to bring to San Jose, so hopefully for them it's "something".
But my question is more about the 500 goal milestone. And this sh!ts me. If you have to keep playing, at league minimum, for teams you don't care about, as a burned-out shell of the player you once were, to reach a milestone, is it worth reaching that milestone? To me that's just totally selfish. Pack and and go home on 495 (or whatever it is), and be remembered as a great talent that score 495. I don't think it adds anything to play as a 4th liner to squeak over 500. It's just a number, but seeing JR bitch and moan about his skates, linemates, ice-time and everything else to get to 500 devalues reaching that milestone to me. If he contributes, great. If he's there for the number, it's piss-poor and I'm sick of players worrying about stats. |

I'm interested to see what Roenick will do, I hope he won't just take up space on the roster. I'll be really happy if he has good chemistry with the rest of the team and he is actually productive.

Not to be a smartass, but who would have thought that Boogaard would make about twice as much as a future hall of famer this year? And the way GM's are throwing money around this summer why not pick up JR for league minimum for one year? I think the only thing this signing could hurt is JR's dignity. (if he has any to lose)
