Veteran defenseman Jaroslav Spacek announced his retirement from professional hockey today, after 13 seasons in the NHL.

Spacek, 38, split last season between the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes, after spending two full years with the Habs.

The native of Rokycany, Czech Republic, cited family and ongoing back problems as the main factors in his decision.

He told iSports.cz the Philadelphia Flyers showed interest in him, as an unrestricted free agent, this summer, but ultimately decided to call it quits.

In 880 career NHL regular-season games with the Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, Canadiens and Hurricanes, Spacek accumulated 82 goals and 273 assists for 355 points, and 618 penalty minutes.

He was originally drafted by the Panthers in the fifth-round (117th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

I must be delusional because I recall Spacek being decent, not terrible when he was with the Sabres. Had heck of a slap shot.

Last thing in which was Spacek interested was fighting in hockey, believe me. He was a good Dman thats why he played so much seasons in the show

Not sure how he was able to defend himself in incidents like a blindsided suckerpunch from Nichol, hit from behind by Lucic or in a fight with Mirasty or Jablonski (dont care which one of these animals it was)
I will leave it up on every grown man decision if its fine or childish to judge players career by these incidents

I will remember Spacek for two things: olympic gold medal and ****ty fighting results

He certainly took some punishment during his NHL career and he always seemed to be in the wrong place during scrums...to his credit he never pulled a Sedin and jumped on the bench when a scrum happened.

Not many Czechs of the "golden era" left now...
