J-F Jacques Suspended Three Games for Head Check
NEW YORK - Anaheim Ducks forward Jean-Francois Jacques has been suspended for three games and will forfeit $23,780.49 in salary for delivering an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger during NHL Game #613 in Anaheim on Sunday, Jan. 8, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
Jacques, who was suspended on Sept. 24, 2011, is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (185). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. The incident occurred at 14:17 of the third period. A major penalty for elbowing was assessed on the play. Jacques will miss games Jan. 10 vs. Dallas, Jan. 12 at Calgary and Jan. 13 at Edmonton. He will be eligible to return Jan. 15 at Vancouver. |

He shouldn't have been suspended at the begining of the year either. It is now clear that Shanah tries to get rid of tough hockey players.

...Jacques LED with his shoulder, ( keeping his elbow-tucked ) with Umberger leaning-forward. Given the "fast-pace" action of hockey --- these type hits are inevitable. Shanahan's department of Player Safety HAS to do a better job of assessing "right and wrong" in regard to doling-out punishments.
...and simply BRANDING players as REPEAT OFFENDERS doesn't necessarily JUSTIFY any explantions as-to what occurred on ice. |

Terrible. He tucks his elbow, stays on the ice, keeps the stick down and does everything correct - but Umberger is bent over so he gets hit in the head with the bicep/shoulder.
This suspension is a disgrace.

I don't like this suspension at all, BUT...
I keep pointing at the Clark MacArthur suspension from the preseason. In my opinion, they have already suspended players for even weaker incidents. I'm not surprised in the least with the ruling, even though it's 3 games more than it deserves. Given the league's standard this season (which I very much disagree with), I don't find this ruling all that inconsistent.

That means he can play in games for Syracuse but has to be called up and serve the suspension before he plays in the NHL again right?
How many more times does Umberger need to get coldcocked to learn to keep hit head up? Shahan is ruinng good hockey.

A lot of you miss the emphasis on the head contact rule. Doesn't matter what position your shoulder or arm are in. If any part of the body (or stick) is used to target an opponent's head it is a violation of the rule. There is no place for it in hockey...it's a game!
