Islanders Sign Nathan McIver to One-Year Contract

The New York Islanders announced today that defenseman Nathan McIver has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal.

McIver, 27, joins the New York Islanders organization for his eighth professional season. The 6'2, 195-pound defensemen posted one goal and 68 penalty minutes in 41 games last season with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.

The Summerside, PEI native has also appeared in 36 NHL contests with the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks, notching one assist and 95 penalty minutes. The Canucks selected McIver in the eighth round (254th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft. In 345 career AHL games with the Manitoba Moose and Providence, McIver has registered 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) and 814 penalty minutes.

Prior to his professional career, McIver played three seasons with the Toronto St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey League, as well as one season with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

Very useful depth defenseman. Physical, fights a lot, old-school dman. Always wanted to see him get a shot in Boston. Not sure what the Isles' dman situation looks like, but hopefully he'll have a better chance at cracking their NHL lineup than Boston's.

We need 6th and 7th for D so he's got a good shot at playing some NHL games if he impresses in camp. Seeing him and Carkner on the 3rd d pairing would numb the pain of another brutal Islander season.

That's just the way it's going to go."

I think he'll see some games on the Island, at the very least hope he gets a look during divisional play. Always been a McIver fan he was buried on the depth chart in Vancouver and Boston, this is a good of a chance as he's ever had to stick and if this was the old league he'd be a four year NHL vet by now.

Always liked McIver... Good little middleweight to have on your roster, but he'll most likely end up in Bridgeport.

Islanders slacked on the toughness last year. If they're bad this season, they should give McIver at least a few games! They would be foolish not to.
