Islanders Sign Mikko Koskinen

The Islanders signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen on Monday to a three-year, entry-level deal.

Koskinen played the last two seasons in the Finnish Elite League, playing for the Espoo Blues. The 6’5”, 182 pound net-minder had a 17-9-7 record and a 1.91 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.

Koskinen, a native of Vantaa, Finland, was selected in the second round, 31st-overall by the Islanders last month in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

I was really skeptical of this pick. He was the first selection of day 2 of the draft after the team had all night to think it over and passed up good prospects at forward and defense to draft him. From everywhere, we heard this was a very weak draft for goalies. Even though the Islanders really needed to restock the prospect cupboard with goaltenders, it doesn't make me any more confident about this guy. He has good numbers, but is also a couple years older than other picks in this year's draft.

I am glad they signed him and will be able to bring him to Bridgeport right away though. I'd like to be wrong about this and hopefully he turns into a good prospect, which the organization desperately needs.

This may mean Lawson is out. Monroe will be the starter in BPT, meaning theres no room for Lawson.

That's a shame, he had a really good year for the Sound Tigers last season. I'm still not a fan of the Munroe signing considering our third string guy will inevitably spend a lot of time with the NHL club with DiPietro and Roloson as the goaltending duo. But maybe when DP gets hurt again Lawson will have a spot again in Bridgeport if they keep him in the organization.

at 6´5 he is still very fast and agile.

plus they were dumb and let mannino go and he could have been a good choice for #1 in bridgeport and #3 for the isles.

They obviously see something in Koskinen. Plus he's a lot younger than Mannino, but we will see how that plays out.

As long as he's not on the Amy Winehouse diet, we'll be ok.

he has time to fill out in Bridgeport.
