Islanders Sign Mark Streit to Five-Year Deal

The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Mark Streit to a five-year contract. Last year with Montreal, Streit played in 81 games and scored 13 goals with 49 assists for 62 points. A specialist on the power play, Streit scored seven goals with 27 assists for 34 points on the man advantage.

"Mark was someone we targeted from the beginning and we're thrilled he's an Islander," said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. "Mark provides us with the stability on the blueline that we were looking for."

Said Streit, who agreed to the contract at 2:00 AM in Switzerland on Tuesday: "It's late in Europe right now, but I'm really happy to be an Islander. The whole day, the Islanders showed interest in me and this is an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

A native of Englisberg, Switzerland, Streit is a veteran of 205 NHL games and has scored 25 goals and 84 assists 109 points. On the power play over the course of three NHL seasons, Streit has scored a total of 11 power goals with 45 assists for 56 points.

Last season, Streit finished tied for 11th in the NHL in power play scoring and finished tied for second among defensemen.

Streit also has eight years of experience in the Swiss league where he scored a total of 57 goals and 139 assists for 196 points in 363 games.

The 30-year old Streit was originally drafted by Montreal in the ninth round (262nd overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

That's not terrible I guess given what Rozsival got. Streit's not particularly good in his own end, but we do need a PP quarterback. He obviously won't put up the same kind of numbers on the Islanders, but he will fill a need and hopefully still be effective by the time this team gets itself competitive in a couple years.

Pretty good signing by the Islanders. Streit is an underrated defenseman that will chip in a lot of points from the blueline, so he should help the Islanders' WEAK power play a lot by being the 'QB' on the point. With guys like Campbell and Redden in the same free-agent pool, I think a lot of people are over-looking Streit, but he's pretty good, and isn't getting grossly overpaid like Campbell is - so he's a very good secondary option for a team like the Isles that missed out on the "top guns".

He loved playing in Montreal and did fit in perfectly there, I somehow fear he won't put up the same numbers in NY under a new coaching staff and another playing style and game-plan.

Bad on his own end? have any of you guys actually watched him play? He's no Lidstrom that he will be great in his own end, but he has never been a McCabe or Souray type of player. This loss to the Habs actually kinda hurts because for the second consecutive season we'll have to find someone to fill the void, and as gifted as Andrei Markov is, i don't ever see him being the main PP QB of the Habs.

Should be a good addition to the Isles. Price tag isn't that bad given contracts like what Roszival got. Will help dramatically on the PP and is a decent D-man IMO.

Probably wont put up the same amount of points, but I like this signing. Hell he had more points than all 6 Islander regualr defenseman combined this season!
