Islanders Sign Jackman To Extension

The New York Islanders have signed forward Tim Jackman to a one-year contract extension. Jackman, currently in his second season with the Islanders, has four goals and two assists for six points and 133 penalty minutes in 57 games this season. He has already established new career-highs in games played, goals, points, penalty minutes and shots this season. The contract runs through the 2009-10 season.

"Tim earned this extension by showing his willingness to do whatever is necessary to help the Islanders succeed," said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. "We know Tim is excited about being an Islander next season and we’re just as excited to have him back."

Jackman (6-4, 210 lbs.) has played in 125 career NHL games and has scored six goals with seven assists for 13 points and 237 penalty minutes. He has played in 93 games as a member of the Islanders and has scored five goals and five assists for 10 points during the course of his two seasons with the club. Jackman has also played in 12 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League this season and scored six goals with one assist for seven points and 35 penalty minutes.

Jackman, a native of Minot, ND, originally signed with the Islanders as a free agent on July 5, 2007 and signed his first extension with the team last June. He has also spent time in the Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings organizations. He was drafted by the Blue Jackets in the second round (38th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

10:25 am - Tim Jackman has been signed to a one-year contract extension through the 2009-10 season.

The Islanders have decided to reward a grinder for his exhaustive efforts to become an NHL regular and fit into the team’s system. After starting the season in Bridgeport with 6 goals in 12 games, Jackman has become a favorite of the Islanders’ coaching staff for his skating, size, grit and desire to stick up for teammates.

After practice yesterday, we asked Jackman about his improved skating. He said, “Two summers ago, I really felt I was at a crossroads. I was at the point in my career where I was either going to make the NHL or not. I decided to do everything possible to put myself in the best position to succeed. I didn’t want to have any regrets.”

Among his initiatives, Jackman hired a personal strength coach and a skating coach and spent his “offseasons” working even harder than he does during the hockey season. This morning, his efforts paid off.

Well deserved, congrats Tim.

Good news, Jackman definitely earned this extension. He put a lot of work in to improve both his all-around game and his skill with the gloves off. I'm glad the Islanders will be keeping him around.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Jackman, he does his fair share of spot-picking and when actually up against a formiddable opponent, he's beaten down pretty bad. But nonetheless, he is a fighter and he worked his ass off to earn a spot in the N, so nothing but respect for him. Congrats.

I don't want to start a huge debate about what constitutes spot-picking, but I never understood those accusations against Jackman. The guy was one of the worst fighters in the NHL last year. These days, he's a much better fighter, but he fights almost exclusively against middleweights and doesn't exactly dominate his competition very often. Yes, he plays a physical game, although he's a pretty clean hitter, but do you really expect the guy to take on the top fighters in the league? Even if he's been the best option on the team at times this year, he's far from a heavyweight enforcer. It's not really his role. Why get demolished by Colton Orr when you can get beat badly by Arron Asham?

Yup, people throw out spot picker way too freely these days. They seem to think that anyone that has a few fights under their belt should be fielding all comers and answering all challenges. It just doesn't work that way with guys like Jackman, Clarkson, Ott, Lucic etc etc. These guys are not enforcers, they're just guys that play physical and will drop the gloves now and then.

TWICE!

Again, spot picker is nowhere near the correct description of Jackman. You can't spot pick when your winning percentage is below 50%. It's like calling Tom Kostopolous a spot picker. The guy plays hard and has become a hell of a two way player. I'm glad they resigned him. He played himself right into this.

Let's put it this way. He is 6'4", I'd say buzzing around 220 lbs, he throws his weight around, runs his mouth and always chooses the smaller guy to go with. Let's just say that he is as much a spot-picker as Ben Eager is.

Production aside, I say this because Hartnell pretty much fits your description of spot picker.

That's because he is a spot-picker.

I will readily admit that any day of the week. Unlike a couple of certain Islander fans...

No no, I agree with you. Hartnell IS a spot picker. Hope that cleared up any confusion.
