Islanders Recall Brett Gallant Under Emergency Conditions

The New York Islanders announced today that forward Brett Gallant has been recalled under emergency conditions from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. Johan Sundstrom has been returned to the Sound Tigers.

Gallant, 25, leads the Sound Tigers with 245 penalty minutes, the fourth highest total in the AHL. The Summerside, PE, native also has two points (one goal, one assist) in 56 games this season.

The Islanders signed Gallant as a free agent on Feb. 5, 2013. The 2013-14 season marks his third full campaign with the Sound Tigers and his fifth professional season. In 140 AHL games with the Sound Tigers and Syracuse Crunch, Gallant has four goals, two assists and 596 penalty minutes.

Prior to his professional career, Gallant skated for both the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and for his hometown’s Summerside Western Capitals in the Maritime Junior Hockey League. Gallant had a breakout year in his final season of junior hockey, recording 73 points (24 goals, 49 assists) and 235 penalty minutes in 50 games with Summerside during the 2008-09 campaign, en route to the Kent Cup title.

Good on the Isles to reward him with some time up. Reminds me of what Washington did for Angelstad and Stroeshein a few years ago.

Looking at the Isles schedule, it's unfortunate that other than Neil and maybe Parros if he's dressed he won't have anybody to really fight.

I just bought tickets for tomorrow.

I hope Kassian and Neil are both in.

One of my favourite former Sea Dogs. Good to see him get a shot, hopefully he can make an impact.

A few winners in this call up. Obviously, Brett Gallant is well deserving of an opportunity to test his skills in the show, other than preseason skates. Tough to forget the preseason fight with Brian Mcgrattan Hard work, perseverance and patience paid off. There has got to be a buzz in the stands for tomorrows game vs Ottawa. And us, the fight fans. If dressed and plays, will hopefully find someone to dance with. As in the past, I do not want to get overly excited, but I'd be lying if I said April 13th isn't now marked on my hockey calendar. The Isles play Buffalo....enough said

Nice job.. Tougher team!!

Great move for the kid and for the Islanders

I am NOT A Garth fan (especially after that DOPEY Vanek trade, holy sh!t I hated that trade from day one!!) -- but with that said, hes actually kept a fairly tough team on the ice, the Islanders have done well in the toughness department for the most part in his tenure in the "new NHL", that we all like and want

I hope the kid gets a chance to roam the ice and do his thing, the NHL should see the excitement a kind like this brings instead of a 4th line euro whos name you cant pronounce (Whooptie dooo ) A guy like Gallant will bring excitement and energy to the building!!

PS.... Seriously, why cant the league see this? The fans LOVE LOVE LOVE the 4 line rough tuff guy over a softie who score 6-8 goals, its amazing how they don't "see this"..

About time. So excited to watch Gallant get some time to play. I finally have a reason to be excited for an Islanders game again.

Now if all owners, commissioners, managers, coaches and players could realize that there are a lot of fans who still enjoy the type of game that Gallant plays, and can/will put people in the seats. Have fun!
