Islanders Re-Sign Matt Moulson

The New York Islanders announced today that left wing Matt Moulson has agreed to terms on a three-year contract.

Moulson, 27, has 29 points (17 goals, 12 assists) in 49 games this season in his second season with the Islanders.

Last year, the North York, ON, native led all Islanders in goals (30), while also establishing career highs in assists (18), points (48) and games played (82). Moulson has yet to miss a game through his two seasons with the Islanders, currently leading the team with 131 consecutive games played.

Moulson was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the ninth round, 263rd overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career in 2006 with the American Hockey League affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, the Manchester Monarchs. In each of the following three seasons with the Monarchs, Moulson tallied over 45 points respectively.

Prior to beginning his professional career, the 6’1”, 210-pound forward enjoyed a four-year career at Cornell University.

Not horrible but I am still not sold on him as a player. Seems to do most things right and the reason why the Pens let him go was because they thought he was never going to be anything more then a 3rd liner. I'm happy he is doing well but the problem is can he do it consistently and when the pressure is on?

Umm what are you taking about? He never played for the Pens. He was drafted by the Kings.

He was Pens property. He was drafted by the Pens

Moulson was drafted 263rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Moulson attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School in Mississauga, where he was a part of the school's hockey team.[1] Moulson graduated from Cornell University in 2006, where he was captain of the hockey team and a member of the Quill and Dagger society in his senior year.

He signed with the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent to an entry-level contract on September 1, 2006.[2] He was then assigned to the Kings affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL for the 2006–07 season, scoring 57 points in 77 games. Moulson made his NHL debut in the 2007–08 season on November 2, 2007 against the San Jose Sharks. Moulson also scored his first NHL goal in the 5-2 victory.[3]

Finally! I was really getting nervous that they wouldn't want to pay the guy. Moulson has been a great find by the Islanders. They've been real big on trying to find treasure from the junk heap over the past couple years, but in this case they seem to have found a decent hockey player. Is he a budding star player? No, but he seems to be a real good cog to have in this endless rebuild. 30 goals last year, he'll have 20-something this year. Good chemistry with Tavares, plays hard and goes to the net. No brainer to reward the guy, but with the Islanders, you're frequently dealing with awfully close to no brain whatsoever, so I've been very nervous. Like IHL, I'm real happy to hear this news.

Typical Islanders fan doesn't know anything about his team.

good move by the Isles, now if they can fix their goaltending situation because it's pretty apparent that Dipietro is clearly not the answer... though they would have to have Ricky retire because clearly no other GM would take on the remaining of that contract...

BTW, weren't there a bunch of Islander fans stating that this contract would look like a steal a few years after it was signed?? how's that turned out for Mr. Wang?

Actually, he never did play for the Pens. Only drafted by them and then after college he wasn't signed by the Pens. Kings signed him as FA. He is good friends with Tavares which is why he went to the Isles to begin with. They seem to have good chemistry.

are you trying to say that if they fix the goaltending they'll be a good team? cause if so, have you seen their defense besides mark streit who is injured a decent amount? they won't be good for a few years and until they get more nhl players instead of guys who should be in bridgeport...

milan jurcina, andrew macdonald, jack hillen, dylan reese and whoever the **** else they have is not gonna make that team a good one anytime soon. and if you look at their forwards, who besides taveres, okposo (if not injured) and moulson scares you? frans nielsen? haha. pierre parenteau? hahaha. not even josh bailey does, their highly touted pick.

Good signing by the Isles

Hes a hard working player, scored 30 goals last year and should get 25 or so goals this year. no hes NOT a superstar, but hes a good legit player who has some chemistry with his linemates and at 27 is in his prime yrs as a player.

Nevermind the stats and him as a hockey player (which are important) BUT this also show the fanbase they are going 2 keep some of the young guys and keep em together, solid move by the Islanders

Good sign!
Moulson deserved it.
I awaits that Isles signs a young Joensuu and Konopka for example.
