Islanders Re-Sign Matt Martin to Four-Year Contract

The New York Islanders officially announced today that Matt Martin has agreed to terms on a four-year contract.

Martin, 23, completed his first full season with the Islanders last year, setting a career best in goals with seven, to go along with his seven assists for 14 points in 80 games. He also set the NHL single season record for hits with 374.

A fifth round selection (148th overall) in the 2008 NHL Draft, Martin has played in a total of 153 NHL games, totaling 30 points (12 goals and 18 assists) and accumulating 294 penalty minutes.

The 6’3, 210-pound left wing began his professional career with the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He played in 76 games during the 2009-10 season, scoring 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points.

Martin played three years in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting. He finished his junior hockey career with 63 goals and 46 assists for 109 points in 166 games. The Windsor, ON native served as the Sting’s team captain his final season in Sarnia, 2008-09.

all stats improved, bigger stronger... glad he signed 4 years!

1 million a year for his effort? Kid fought the toughest division alone on many nights. They should pay him two million for what they did to him last season.

Very good signing, the kid competes every night for the Islanders, (hits everything, plays hard, scraps, etc) i think he can also be a 30-40 point player as well and still play physical - a good player in today game

The Islander blogsite is saying its $4 million per season, i think thats off somehow

Very solid move for the Islanders and Martin, now the wait lol

lol, Boulton will be 37 to start the season and after a year out of the NHL and an expired contract, not likely. This is probably his last year so I'm sure he wants to play as much as anyone.

Great deal for the Isles. Every team needs a couple players like Matt Martin as far as I'm concerned. Glad to see he's going to get plenty of time in the NHL.
