Islanders' Hill Suspended 20 Games

NEW YORK/TORONTO -- New York Islanders defenseman Sean Hill has been suspended 20 games for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program. The suspension begins with tonight's Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinal game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment.

The player's contract expires with the conclusion of the 2006-07 season. Any portion of the suspension that remains following the Islanders' participation in the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs would resume, without pay, at the beginning of any successor contract.

You are happy he has a substance abuse problem? That is a disease that hits close to home for almost everyone as most people have had at least one person close to them have their life ruined by such an issue. And you're happy? I don't even know what to say. Words can't even begin to describe how distasteful your comments are.

Is it steroids, or other substances he is on?

Before you give someone your little speech, you should change your name.

I wonder if he is done with the NHL, considering he has a 20 game suspension and he will be a FA after this season.

"Sean Hill has been suspended 20 games for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program."

I thought the implication here was that is was a performance enhancing drug. I believe there's a different stigma attached to problems involving performance enhancement drugs, as these abusers are taking these drugs to gain an unfair advantage over their opponents. So, in this case, I think people wouldn't say he has a "problem", as one might have with drugs or alcohol, but rather the "problem" is that he's trying to cheat....In which case, I could understand people's satisfaction is seeing someone getting their due punishment, especially someone as unpopular as Sean Hill.

The guy maybe slow as all hell, but he's player pretty well on the blueline all season. Very disappointing to hear about this, I'd hope they'll release what he was taking. And this really couldn't come at a worse time for the Islanders. I hope they informed the team earlier so they may have had a chance to call someone up. Otherwise this is real bad news.

yes, you're right

the league should be filled with players who take performance enhancing drugs, it'll only make the competition fair

i cannot even begin to to understand your reasoning

Ah, fair enough. If that's the case then it's my mistake. What got me was the part that stated:

"Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment. "

That and the fact that I just can't picture Sean Hill of all people using performance enhancing drugs. A visor wearing, only semi physical defenseman seems like less than a prime candidate to take performance enhancing substances, but I guess he did. If that is the case (which I am now fairly convinced it is) then I apologize as I was wrong. However if it does turn out to be that he has an addiction then I surely stand by my original statement.

Where in the post of mine you quoted did I even mention performance enhancing drugs? I didn't. Read my above post, I missed the part about performance enhancing drugs in the original release, and for that I am wrong, and I even apologized for it in a previous post. But for you to somehow pull the performance enhancing drug argument out of my post, which very, very clearly only made reference to substance abuse, is quite incorrect. Again, originally I was wrong, but in your latest post the conclusions you have drawn have nothing to do with the content of my post.

Just to reference this point, let's pretend I was correct in my original assumption which was in fact incorrect.

I feel that people should be able to make light of pretty much everything so long as it is does not have malicious undertones and so long as it is truly only meant to be in good fun, as is my moniker, "paint huffer". If someone were ever to truly take an issue with my name and truly take offense to it, then I would seriously consider changing it.

I have had two uncles kill themselves due to addiction and the addiction issues have been much more widespread in my family, so I am well aware of how serious they are. Still, I feel that if it is done properly, making light of situations can be done all in good fun. That is a massive contrast from what I felt (incorrectly) that the original poster was doing, which I perceived to be wishing a substance abuse problem on another human being.

The difference between what you tried to parallel as analogous to my screen name (what you deemed to be my "little speech") are in fact night and day.

I don't know what drugs are on this list but I would not be surprised at all if is was just (ephedra) sudafed in particular. You never know though. A player at 37 years old and who plays physical game could be using something more than just stimulants to try and keep up with the younger players.
