Islanders Add Enforcer Zenon Konopka

The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Zenon Konopka.

Konopka, a native of Niagara On the Lake, ON was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning the past two seasons. He led the league in penalty minutes last season with 265. Konopka played in 74 games and tallied two goals and three assists while compiling 265 penalty minutes to lead the National Hockey League. An undrafted free agent, Konopka began his pro career with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2005-06, dressing in 23 games and scoring seven points (four goals and three assists). He also played a total of nine games with the Columbus Blue Jackets and accumulated 35 penalty minutes.

A 29-year-old center, Konopka has seen stints in Cincinnati (AHL), Portland (AHL), Syracuse (AHL) and Norfolk (AHL).

I wanted him for the Devils 4th line, but this is the next best thing. So awesome he's coming to the Atlantic on a team I don't really hate.

Dude, I'm hoping he's Richard Park's replacement. And this doesn't take Gillies spot on the wing either.

Needless to say, Richard Park: the traffic the Throgs Neck is nasty on Friday's, leave early and drive fast!

Wonder what this does for Gillies. I know they are good friends. Hopefully, both will stay up.

Great for the Isles. He is quite a valuable player as a 4th line centerman.

The Islanders need a 4th line center/a guy that will try to kill penalties/toughness. This does not affect Gillies, who is a winger, at all.

Boogaard, Godard, Rupp, Shelley, Asham or Carcillo, and PLLL is whats up. The Atlantic Divison is going to be rough and tough this year.

Konopka should automatically get an A on his jersey too. I can't wait till this is official. I'm more excited for this, from a pure entertainment and fan standpoint, than I am about the Devils signings yesterday.

I hope so. Every other team in the division is pretty stacked with toughness, so having just one guy like Konopka isn't gonna be enough.
