Islanders Acquire Rights to Ehrhoff

The New York Islanders have acquired the rights to defenseman Christian Ehrhoff from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the Islanders fourth round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Ehrhoff completed his second full season with Vancouver in 2010-11 playing in 79 games. The Moers, Germany native tied his career high for goals (14) and set career high numbers in assists (36) and points (50) last season. During the Canucks run to the Stanley Cup Final, Ehrhoff played in 23 games, scoring two goals and 10 assists for 12 points. Ehrhoff totaled 94 points (28 goals and 66 assists) in 159 games with Vancouver.

The 6’2, 203 pound defenseman was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round (106 overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played in 341 career games with the Sharks over five seasons, tallying 25 goals and 107 assists for 132 points.

Ehrhoff represented his home country, Germany, at the past two Winter Olympic Games. In the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, he registered two points (one goal and one assist) in five games and in the 2010 Olympic Games, Ehrhoff played in four games.

Damn, that's pretty big. Ehroff/Streit would be one hell of a PP backend. Has there been a time recently where a team acquired a player's rights but couldn't sign him?

No, Ehrhoff will be testing open waters on July 1, and will probably land a big pay day - especially with both Bieksa and Pitkanen both off the market.

The Canucks locking up Bieksa to such a big deal yesterday, especially in regards to length and salary amount, pretty much ensured it would be impossible to bring Ehrhoff back as well. Not much chance of getting him to agree to a so-called discount. So good for Gillis to see the writing on the wall and at least get something back for him instead of losing him for nothing.

Isles have 2 days to talk with him, but I highly doubt they'll get anywhere with him. Latest rumour I heard is that Ehrhoff is looking for over 5 mil/season. It'll be interesting to see where he lands on July 1, but d-men who can skate, shoot, and move the puck like he can are in high demand and short supply, so I expect the bidding war for him to be high....

You have to think the Islanders are pretty confident they can get him signed though. It was a 4th rounder, you wouldn't expect them to just toss that away for some odd chance at landing a player.

We'll see I guess...

yeah, well said.. I can see the islanders easily offering close to 6-6.5 million they gotta reach the cap floor. I like that move, islanders have a young quick team, perfect guy to put in the mix

Ya, it'd be a great thing for the Isles if they could ink him. Wow

Man with Him and Streit, and Hamonic A-Mac that would be pretty sweet.

Then you have Jurcina and who? for the 3rd pair.

CanuckFan, why do you think the Isles will have to pay a "discount price?" I have been hoping that some UFA would see what is going on on the island and try to make a difference. I hope this is it.

maybe hillen or eaton for the 3rd pairing spot? they should go after James Wisniewski, he played great with them. You guys would have two sick power play units with guys on the point. I'm telling you if the stadium goes through you'll start seeing big names want to come to the island. If the rangers don't go crazy and stick to building the prospects into their system you'll start seeing NYR and NYI on the top of the standings. The Atlantic will be the best division in the NHL

I heard Ehrhoff was offered the same deal as Bieksa and turned it down.

Yup...thats the truth. He doesn't even know he got traded. Its 2am in Germany or something like that and his agent has not gotten in touch with him. Islanders are on the clock!

Gillis gets a lot of praise by Vancouver homers, but the deal to get Ballard was a terrible move. Ballard is no more than a 5th or 6th dman, & he traded Grabner & a top pick to get Ballard. If he didn't have Ballard they could have kept Ehrhoff. I wish just once, Gillis would admit he made an error in judgement but his ego is so ****in' huge, I think his head would explode if he did admit that he's made some bad moves since arriving. I'd be surprised if he signed with the Islanders. There are some better teams to choose from.

I think Hill might be done on the Island and Eaton looked pretty bad before getting Iislander hip.

Do the Islanders still have Mike Mottau under contract?
