Ian Laperriere Joins Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed free agent right wing Ian Laperriere to a multi-year contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“[Laperriere] is a role player that can take a little bit of the burden off some of our other guys in other roles like penalty killing and face-offs,” said Holmgren. “He is a warrior-type player and very durable. He will provide us with lots of energy and is one of those types of character players that everybody is after.

“When Philly called, I got very excited,” said Laperriere of joining the Flyers organization. “They show their fans and they show their team that they want to win, and they’ll do anything to win. We have a lot of guys on this team that haven’t won yet, and they want to prove to the hockey world that they’re winners.”

Laperriere, 35, recorded 19 points (7G,12A) in 74 games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2008-09. He led the team with 163 penalty minutes and appeared in his 1,000th game in the National Hockey League on Apr. 11, 2009 vs. the Vancouver Canucks. He spent the past four seasons with the Avalanche where he accumulated 40 goals and 72 assists for 112 points in 307 regular season games.

Over parts of 16 seasons in the NHL, Laperriere has recorded 118 goals and 198 assists for 316 points and 1,794 penalty minutes in 1,001 career regular season contests with the St. Louis Blues (1993-94 to 1995-96), New York Rangers (1995-96), Los Angeles Kings (1995-96 to 2003-04) and Colorado (2005-06 to 2008-09). He has also posted 12 points (3G,9A) and 96 penalty minutes in 54 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Laperriere was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the seventh round (158th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

And the tough get tougher.

Do they still have Carcillo? Or is he an FA?

Nice pick up by the Flyers, at a decent price too. Every team can use a guy like Lappy in their lineup, I wonder how many offers he got before he chose Philly?

Good job, whoever got Lappy. I think he wants to win, and maybe the Pronger trade made him choose Philly more.
