Hurricanes Sign Stephen Peat

RALEIGH, NC – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager for the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Stephen Peat on a one-year contract. The deal will pay Peat $450,000 at the NHL level and $75,000 at the American Hockey League level.

“Stephen has fully recovered from the injury that kept him out of action at the end of last season, and he adds more toughness to our organization,” said Karmanos.

Peat, 26, split the 2005-06 season between Washington (NHL), Hershey (AHL) and Lowell (AHL). He made his season debut with the Washington Capitals against Atlanta on Oct. 8 prior to missing 21 games with a hand injury. The Princeton, B.C., native was assigned to Hershey on Dec. 18 and registered one assist, seven penalty minutes and a (+3) rating in five games with the Bears. Acquired by the Hurricanes on Dec. 28 in exchange for Colin Forbes, Peat played three games with the Lock Monsters, totaling one goal, one assist (2 points) and 23 penalty minutes before missing the final half of the season with a groin/abdominal injury.

A second-round draft pick of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Peat has totaled 10 points (8g, 2a) and 234 penalty minutes in 130 career NHL games, all with Washington. He has seven points (3g, 4a) and 148 penalty minutes in 49 career AHL games with Portland, Hershey and Lowell.

Boulerice, Peat, Isbister looks like very good squad. Hope Jesse and Stephen will play in NHL next year. Peat especially against Caps.

I was hoping the Blues would've made a play for him.

Peat or Boulerice will be in the minors for the vast majority of the year. There is no way a team like the Canes will keep both guys up. Personally, it doesnt matter who they keep up, as long as they keep one guy up.

Both he and Boulerice got 2 way deals. I wonder if they will be battling for a spot or if they are both Albany bound? I would imagine one would spend time on the big club, however the only ice he'd be near are the cubes floating in his drink while he watches the game from the press box. Personally I like Steve Peat better and I hope he somehow makes the team and finds a way to play.

boulerice is gone right? so peat has the shot at making the team as their enforcer.

Nope, Boulerice is there as well. Talk about toughness upgrades over the summer. Boulerice, Walker, Isbister, and bringing Peat back. Not bad. Question is will Peat/Boulerice see a combined 50 games with the big club. Wouldn't count on it.

Carolina is going to play Washington 8 times and I'm sure they want someone in there to keep an eye on Brashear. One of the two will certainly be in the lineup for those games......I hope.

Good to see him rebound. I hope Peat stays up, as do all Peat Fans I would guess.

He was traded to St. Louis in the Weight deal then signed during the off-season.

I think/hope that Boulerice or Peat will play in the NHL.

If not they will have 3 heavys at Albany!

anyway I am really really happy to see that Carolina will have a tougher team next Year ( Commodore,Walker,Cole,Isbister and hopefully Peat) and Boulerice and Kinkel with a lot of other guys in the ahl.

This is bad news, I was hoping he would sign with a enforcer-less team. Now one of them has to go.
