Hurricanes Sign Justin Soryal
RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Director of Hockey Operations of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Justin Soryal (SOHR-yahl) on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Soryal $525,000 at the NHL level, or $80,000 at the minor-league level in 2011-12.
“Justin is a big, physical forward that will bring an element of toughness to the organization,” said Francis. Soryal, 24, finished the 2010-11 season ranked 11th in the AHL, and second among Whale skaters with 220 penalty minutes. The Newmarket, Ont., native skated in 79 of Connecticut’s 80 regular-season games last season, scoring three goals and earning three assists (6 points). In 189 career regular-season games with the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliates, Soryal (6’3”, 211 lbs.) has scored 11 goals, earned 14 assists (25 points) and accumulated 493 penalty minutes. The Rangers signed Soryal as an undrafted free agent on March 12, 2008, after he completed his four-year major-junior career with Peterborough of the Ontario Hockey League. I don't see this costing Bodie at all, considering Soryal didn't even get a whiff of a shot with the Rangers, and probably won't with the Canes either.
