Hurricanes Release Cale Hulse
RALEIGH, NC — Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that defenseman Cale Hulse has been released from the team’s training camp. Hulse, a 10-year NHL veteran, attended the Hurricanes’ training camp on a free-agent tryout basis, and skated in two of Carolina’s three exhibition games this past weekend. In the two games, Hulse (6’3”, 220 lbs.) earned three assists, averaged more than 17 minutes of ice time and posted a minus-2 plus/minus rating. The 32-year old Edmonton, Alb., native played in 39 NHL games in 2005-06, and registered four assists and 63 penalty minutes for Calgary and Columbus.

I'm disappointed to hear of Cale's release. I thought he looked good Friday night against Nashville. He was on the ice for three of Nashville's goal, but I put the blame on his defensive parter Oleg Tverdovsky on two of the goals. The other was a fluky "off the goalie's back from behind the net" goal. He had three assists in two game but did unfortunately take some bad penalties. All in all we're surprised here in Raleigh that he got release and not slow-footed Jason Woolley.

He wasn't signed to a contract by the Canes; just in camp as a free agent.
