Hurricanes Re-Sign Mike Commodore

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Mike Commodore to a two-year contract. The deal will pay the defenseman $1.2 million in 2006-07 and $1.3 million in 2007-08.

“Mike had an outstanding postseason and was solid throughout the regular season during his first year in Raleigh,” said Rutherford. “He is reliable for our team on the ice and a tremendous ambassador off of it.”

Commodore, 26, established career highs in games played (72), goals (3), assists (10), points (13) and penalty minutes (138) in 2005-06, his fifth NHL season and first with Carolina. The Ft. Saskatchewan, Alb., native led all Hurricanes defensemen in plus/minus during the regular season with a plus-12 rating, and led the team in penalty minutes (138). Two of his three goals during the season were game-winning tallies.

Commodore (6’5’’, 228 lbs.) was tied for second among Carolina defenseman in goals during the playoffs with two, and scored one of the Hurricanes’ two shorthanded goals during the postseason. He had two goals and two assists (4 points) while playing in all 25 playoff games for the Hurricanes en route to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup title. Commodore averaged 19:27 of ice time per game and registered a plus-1 during the postseason.

Acquired from Calgary in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2005 Entry Draft on July 29, 2005, Commodore has totaled 20 points (4g, 16a) in 147 career NHL games with New Jersey, Calgary and Carolina. He spent the 2004-05 season with Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL), notching six goals and 29 assists (35 points) in 73 games played.

Nice signing by the canes. Mike Commodore is a very good player. As he has proved this by getting the cup this year.
