Hurricanes Place Wesley on IR, Recall Nolan and Conboy

RALEIGH, NC— Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Tim Conboy and forward Brandon Nolan from Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL). Defenseman Glen Wesley has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 5, due to illness. Conboy and Nolan are expected to be available to play for Carolina tonight against the Colorado Avalanche at the RBC Center.

This marks the fourth recall of the season for Nolan, 24. Nolan played for Albany last night in Portland, tallying one goal and two assists in the River Rats’ 6-5 loss, after being reassigned to Albany earlier in the day. The St. Catharine’s, Ont., native made his NHL debut with Carolina at Tampa Bay on Dec. 22, and has played in five games with the Hurricanes this season, earning one assist and averaging 6:37 of ice time. Nolan (6’1”, 192 lbs.) ranks second among River Rats skaters with 14 goals and 30 points while playing in 33 AHL games this season.

This marks Conboy’s first recall to Carolina. The Farmington, MN, native currently leads the River Rats in penalty minutes (147). Conboy (6’2’’, 210 lbs.) has totaled one goal and one assist (2 points) and a plus-5 plus/minus rating in 40 AHL games this season. Originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round (217th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Conboy has tallied 14 goals and 33 assists (47 points) and 568 penalty minutes in 254 career AHL games. He signed with the Hurricanes as a free agent on July 21, 2006, and has yet to make his NHL debut.

Interesting call up in Conboy. I'd probably classify him as a light heavyweight as he usually fights a mix of middleweights and heavyweights. With that said, he'll fight anyone and is very willing. Not really that good of a fighter though.

Nolan's been racking up a lot of mileage recently going back and forth.

Yeah, Nolan just got sent down yesterday in anticipation of Ray Whitney returning from the flu. Sadly that didn't happen so I guess he got back on the plane before he got off.
Conboy took on (and got manhandled by) Scott Parker on his first shift, got an assist on his second, and hit the post on the third. Almost a Gordie Howe hat trick in his first three shifts in the NHL. Quite an auspicious start in the NHL.

good to hear but it looked like brookbank was a healthy scratch again. does this mean he is going to be sent down soon. shawn thornton had a nice black eye today from his fight with brookbank a few days ago.
