With Tom Rowe being great friends with Carolina GM Jim Rutherford, and his new position as Hurricanes assistant coach, I really feel Gillies might get his chance this season to see some regular season NHL action providing Carolina doesnt go out and sign another free agent tough guy for their big club.
Gillies in my opinion has been the best and most consistent AHL/Minor Pro Enforcer over the last 5 seasons. A guaranteed 115K even if he never plays an NHL game is not a bad deal at all, although I will always feel he and all guys that do that job on a minor pro level are all vastly underpaid.
I dont buy that Gillies should never fight Boogaard again. He was doing quite well in that fight until he got caught. I think he would do just fine in a rematch with Boogey. I dont know Carolina`s preseason schedule, but they would be doing Trevor a great service and it would really be no skin off their backs if they were to suit him up in games where he would potentially face at least one elite NHL Heavyweight and give him the opportunity to show what he is capable of. It all comes down to opportunity and being in the right place at the right time with the right organizational support.
Gillies is just as tough as many enforcers currently in the NHL. This might be his last shot at making the show being that he will turn 30 in January, so all the best to him and hopefully he works his a$$ off this summer and gives it his all. If somehow he doesnt make it and Mirasty re-signs with Columbus, at least we could all look forward to seeing two of the biggest warriors in the AHL just going to war with each other and showing the NHL what they are sadly missing out on.
