Hurricanes Agree to Terms With Andrew Alberts

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Andrew Alberts on a two-year contract. The deal will pay Alberts $800,000 in 2009-10 and $1.3 million in 2010-11.

“Andrew is a big, physical defenseman who should be just coming into his prime at the NHL level,” said Rutherford. “He had a good year for the Flyers after suffering an injury the previous season, and should help solidify our blueline with his defensive presence.”

Alberts, 28, earned career highs in games played (79), goals (1), assists (12), points (13) and plus/minus (+6) in 2008-09 after being acquired by the Philadelphia Flyers in a trade on Oct. 13. The Minneapolis, MN, native led all Flyers skaters in hits (157) and ranked third on the team in blocked shots (133). He ranked third among Flyers defensemen in total shorthanded time on ice, and fourth among Philadelphia blueliners in plus/minus (+6). Alberts (6’5”, 218 lbs.) skated in all six Flyers playoff games, earning one assist and totaling 10 penalty minutes during the team’s six-game series against Pittsburgh.

Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round, 179th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Alberts has totaled two goals, 30 assists (32 points) and 292 penalty minutes in 263 career NHL games with the Bruins and Flyers. Prior to turning professional, he played four seasons at Boston College, where he was a two-time NCAA East First-Team All-American.

Actually, I would think Paul Maurice would use that footage to pump-himself.

Was my favorite Bruin when he was here. Big, tough, stay-at-home defeneman. Unfortunetly, he hasn't really been the same since his concussion 2 years ago.

The Canes are adding some grit but I wish they would sign an enforcer. But with Maurice as the coach, an enforcer probably wouldn't even play...

I'm happy that this yeam seems to be getting a little tougher this year. Would you qualify Alberts as any kind of an enforcer though and if so is he capable of handling another teams HW. I know he's not gonna exactly floor Laraque, but is he enough to at least stand up to them. I know he's tough, but I haven't seen him play against anyone, but Carolina.

I wonder if this bad blood still exists???

Yes, Alberts will fight anyone that comes after him, not saying he's gonna win any of those fights, but I don't think I've seen him ever reject a fight.
Alberts is a good hitter and he has the old school mentality of backing up the hits. He's fought guys like Domi, Peters when Peters was still good, Janssen, Clarkson, Mayers, VandenBussche. Good teammate too.

Man, the Canes love signing these punching bags. Although I have to admit, Alberts looked like he improved his fighting when he was on Philly from when he was a Bruin.

Like Kostopolous, Alberts is willing. He's also a decent defenseman. Good signing I guess.

I like Alberts and think this is a good signing by the Canes. Even if they're still desperately in need of an actual enforcer, this move, combined with the recent signing of Kotopoulos shows that they seem to want to add at least a little grit to their lineup. And they're getting guys that Paul Maurice is less likely to bench for showing they have a pair.

Very good stay-at-home defenseman, but a terrible fighter for a guy his size.
