Hurricanes Add Defenseman Jay Harrison

RALEIGH, NC—Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Jay Harrison on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Harrison $500,000 at the NHL level and $125,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level in 2009-10, with $175,000 guaranteed.

“Jay is a big defenseman who has been a depth player in the Toronto system since turning professional,” said Karmanos. “His size and experience should allow him to compete for a roster spot with the Hurricanes next season.”

Harrison, 26, split 2008-09 between Zug of the Swiss National League and the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Zug, Harrison (6’4”, 211 lbs.) scored six goals, added nine assists (15 points) and collected 96 penalty minutes in 41 regular-season games. The Oshawa, Ont., native signed with Toronto on March 27 after Zug’s season ended, and played in seven games with the Maple Leafs, earning one assist and totaling 10 penalty minutes.

The Maple Leafs drafted Harrison in the in the third round, 82nd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, and he turned professional at the end of the 2001-02 season. In 376 career regular-season games with Toronto’s AHL affiliates, Harrison scored 32 goals, earned 66 assists (98 points) and accumulated 564 penalty minutes. In 20 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs, he earned two assists and totaled 18 penalty minutes.

If I was a Leafs fan I would be pissed honestly. I love the fact that Burke is making this team tough as nails but he is being a ****ing idiot in the process. Harrison, Newbury & Williams have been the future of the Leafs. These guys have been giving it there all and all 3 have become solid hockey players and are still getting better. Burke was more focussed on signing ****ing Richard Greenop who won't see NHL ice in Toronto unless Orr gets hurt. Stupid. Lost 3 solid call-ups for no good reason.

I can't say I'm too mad as the Wings went ahead and grabbed two of them but I'd have to say Burke is doing a horrible job. Everyone hyped him as a tough GM and he fed into it way to much. Now you got 3 heavyweights in the system maybe 4 if Sugar gets a contract but nobody else to call-up when the injury bug hits Toronto.

And everyone knows it will hit Toronto like it does every year. Congrats on the first overall pick next year Toronto.

Newburry isn't the future of the leafs, thats an asinine thing to say, the dude isn't that good of a hockey player or fighter.
I agree though, Getting rid of Jeremy Williams was the stupidest possible thing they could do, the kid was a demon. And Harrison I can understand, the leafs have way to many Defensemen as it is.

Harrison wouldn't have seen any ice time, and no one wanted him last time anyways. Not a big loss, but he has balls. Williams, also no big deal. But thing with him is, every time he got called up, he scored. So wherever he goes he will flourish. Either way, petty moves. And if you think Burke is doing a horrible job, man, are you clueless, as clueless as they come.

Harrison should make at least Carolina's top eight. Babchuk is being himself again and won't sign, and as far as experience and the size Carolina is looking for I think Harrison is the man they were looking for in that respect. I'm still not sure this is the veteran defensman they were looking for though and talking about getting, if not then I would guess he will fall out of the top 8.

Yeah we will see when there at the bottom of the NorthEast division for the second straight year with even less points then they had last. This team basically blows if you ask me.

Not bad. Hurricanes needed more toughness since all they had was Walker and Gleason

That would be ideal for a rebuilding team. How the heck do you figure the loss of Harrison and Williams, AHL guys, mediocre ones at that, is gonna impact the NHL team? Ah forget it, your logic is wack. You hate the team, hate the sweater, hell even hate Burke, but don't let that get in the way of your thinking.

Go Leafs Go mother ****er
