Hurricanes Activate Kaberle; Assign Conboy to Albany
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has activated defenseman Frantisek Kaberle from injured reserve. To clear room for Kaberle on the active roster, the Hurricanes reassigned defenseman Tim Conboy to the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Kaberle, 35, has earned three assists and averaged 17:31 of ice time in seven games played this season. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native has missed the Hurricanes’ last four games, and a combined 24 games this season, with a leg injury. Kaberle (6’0”, 190 lbs.) has scored 28 goals and earned 160 assists (188 points) in 500 NHL regular-season games with Los Angeles, Atlanta and Carolina since the Kings drafted him in the third round, 76th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He is in his fourth season with the Hurricanes after signing with Carolina as a free agent in July 2004.

At least Carolina still has a serviceable heavyweight. Don't be so over-dramatic... they're nowhere near being as weak as Detroit.

Since taking over on December 3, the Hurricanes have played the Penguins (without Eric Godard), the Flyers twice, the Capitals, the Rangers (with Dan Fritsche skating over Colton Orr), and the Canadiens (without Georges Laraque). Wade Brookbank has played in both games against Philadelphia and against Washington, fighting Riley Cote once. The games he didn't play were against teams without enforcers, so there is really no purpose for Wade in the lineup. Scott Walker is just now becoming fully healthy after a nagging hand injury suffered in a preseason fight with Nate Guenin. Tim Gleason has played 2 games since coming off the IR. And Tim Conboy played about 5 games with the team, all at defense. To say Maurice has pussified the team by sending Conboy back to Albany is unfair, as he was not a part of this team until 4 of our top 6 defensemen went down with injury. In fact, Maurice put Josef Melichar on waivers to bring up Conboy, so an argument can be made that he actually attempted to add toughness to the team. Is this an ideal situation? No, of course not. But your point, if you had one, was more than a little off-base. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that we are one of the toughest teams in the league. We are probably one of the bottom 10 in terms of toughness. But to paint us in the same category as Detroit is downright absurd. You just worry about your Islanders, you have a good thing going with the Thompson line.
