Hurricanes Acquire Kevin Westgarth

RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired forward Kevin Westgarth from the Los Angeles Kings. In exchange for Westgarth, Carolina has traded forward Anthony Stewart, its 2013 fourth-round draft pick and a sixth-round selection in the 2014 draft to the Kings.

“We were looking for a character, team guy who can play a gritty role for our team,” said Rutherford. “Kevin is a good addition to fill that spot.”

Westgarth, 28, is entering his seventh professional season. In 2011-12, he played 25 games with Los Angeles, notching one goal, earning one assist (2 points) and accumulating 39 penalty minutes. In 90 career NHL regular-season games with the Kings, the Amhurstberg, Ont., native has earned five points (1g, 4a) while totaling 153 penalty minutes. Westgarth appeared in all six of the Kings’ 2011 postseason games, recording two assists, 14 penalty minutes and a plus-2 rating.

Westgarth (6’4”, 234 lbs.) originally signed with Los Angeles as a free agent on March 16, 2007, after four seasons at Princeton University. In addition to his NHL experience, he has totaled 22 goals, 28 assists (50 points) and 580 penalty minutes in 224 American Hockey League (AHL) games with Manchester.

Dunno what to think of it yet. Like the extra picks thrown in. No legit HW sucks though.

Edit; Westie wouldn't have seen the LA ice much regardless though... Just hope he plays plenty in CAR.

This has to pave the way for clune. Clifford could have a busy year

Clune won't see time up unless rivalries get crazy, also Clifford is on track to be the 13th or 14th forward. Thinking the workload is getting spread out this year for the Kings with King biting the bullet against HW's. Both him and Nolan could be hitting 5+ fights in the shortened season.

That much offered up for Westgarth? The guy isn't even one of the better fighters out there. Although if it's a serious need I guess you're in no position to barter a better deal.

Great move by canes. East is loaded with legit HWs while the west keeps dwindling down.

I guess having a hand in the CBA negotations earns you this sort of treatment....

This should at least provide some entertainment for the fanbases forced to endure the Boredom-Canes

Good Luck to Westie. Hopefully he will get regular playing time in Carolina and get back to Manchester ways of fighting.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings do something else, especially with the Willie Mitchell injury.

I think the Kings will start the season with a 4th line of Clifford-Fraser-Nolan. They will be busy in game one with Chicago coming to town.

Nice to see another heavyweight in the East. Westgarth likely would have gone to waste in LA this season since there really aren't many guys left in the West for him to fight.

Nice to see a change in philosophy in Carolina.

Westgarth follows his buddy Parros to the Southeast Division.

They do need the toughness especially in the beefed up East but considering the 'Canes past record for playing tough guys.....I'll believe it when I see it.
