Hawks Acquire Hilbert from Boston

General Manager Dale Tallon announced tonight that the Chicago Blackhawks acquired forward Andy Hilbert from the Boston Bruins in exchange for the Blackhawks’ 5th round pick in the 2006 entry draft.

Hilbert, 24, is 5.11 and weighs in at 194 pounds. The Lansing, Michigan native was Boston’s 2nd round pick in the 2000 NHL entry draft out of the University of Michigan in the CCHA. Hilbert was a CCHA First Team All-Star in 2001 and was named to the NCAA West First All-American Team that same year.

Last season for Providence in the American Hockey League, Hilbert appeared in 79 games scoring 37 goals and adding 42 assists for 79 points with 83 penalty minutes. He also played in 17 playoff games for Providence and posted 21 points on 7 goals and 14 assists. He was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team in 2002 and was a Second Team AHL All-Star in 2005.

Hilbert has appeared in 38 National Hockey League games, all as a member of the Boston Bruins. In those games he has scored 3 goals while adding 3 assists for 6 points with 18 penalty minutes.

A restricted free agent, Hilbert has not yet played this season.

This is the best they could get for him?

What a joke!
I understand he wasn't going to play in Boston. The Bruins have way too much depth at forward, and he wants to play on a team's top 2 lines... Something he couldn't do in Boston. He lead the Baby B's in scoring last year (79 points in 79 games I believe), so he has a scoring touch.

I always liked him, and wish he was still around. Boston could of used him right now on the 4th line, But he wanteed out... and now he's out. I think he'll make a name for himself with The Hawks.

i guess bringing in Fitzgerald, Isbister, Scatchard, Orr, Zhamnov, Leahy, and Boyes kind of squeezed him out?

Don't really understand bringing in Isbister (injury prone) and paying Zhamnov all that money, and watching him ride pine with injuries. Apparently Orr, Leahy, and Boyes were a better fit that Hilbert, since they all cam from Providence last year. He should get some nice minutes in Chi-town though

He never did much when he was called up, he can score all he wants in the AHL but that doesn't mean a damn thing if you can't do it in the bigs. He never impressed me and I thought he was on the soft side too.

Fitzgerald, Orr, Scatchard are players for the 3rd and 4th line, but Hilbert thought he is a 1st or 2nd line player and asked for a trade. So I think it's only good that they move him.
In Chicago they can use him especially now with Ruutu out. Arnason and Hilbert could be a nice tandem.
