Habs Ink Matt D'Agostini to One-Year Contract

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Friday the signing of forward Matt D’Agostini to a one-year contract for the 2009-10 season.

Last season, D’Agostini amassed 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists) with an average ice time of 13:24 in 53 regular-season games with the Canadiens. The 22-year-old was the AHL’s third-leading scorer with 25 points (14 goals, 11 assists) and a plus-7 rating in 20 games when he was recalled by the Canadiens from the Hamilton Bulldogs in November. D’Agostini also made his NHL playoff debut in 2008-09, taking part in three of the Canadiens’ four quarter-final contests against the Boston Bruins.

In 2007-08, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native was the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer with 53 points (23 goals, 30 assists) and fired 235 shots on goal in 76 AHL games.

In 2006-07, in his first season as a pro, D’Agostini won the Calder Cup with the Bulldogs. The six-foot, 201-pound right-winger registered 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists) with a plus-5 rating in 22 AHL playoff contests. He also scored 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) and posted a plus-18 rating in 63 regular-season games.

D’Agostini was selected in the sixth round, 190th overall by the Canadiens at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

we got Cammarlari, a 39 goal scorer.
and D'aggostini has some 2 line potential. He has a good shot and isnt a complete dud like O'byrne. chances are he wont do anything this year...

If Cammalari can get close to that with this Habs team this year then you guys are really on to something. I do agree that if he shows well early on D"Agostini does have potential to get some 2nd line minutes.

you do know that Cammalari actually got 39 goals last year? he was around 9th in the league with goals.

I think Cammalleri is actually consistent enough to pull this off. The Habs are an offensive team: they kinda put a new coat of paint on that label as soon as they signed Spacek and decided to put very little money on defensive defensemen.

By the way, forget Matt D'Agostini making the second line. That place is reserved for Max Pacioretty, mark MY words. D'Agostini will be a great winger for Latendresse and Lapierre, who have both improved and may continue improving to the point where we can get quite a bit of mileage out of our third line.

And THAT, by the way, is how you make a playoff contending team: depth is key.

Personally I want room enough for Stewart, BGL and Moen to all play at the same time. Dags to me is somebody, who along with Pleks, I can do without.

As for Cam, he could score 35 plus on this team. Hell, he did that with LA, when he really didnt have anyone to play with.

it's a one year 2 way contract, in a sense i'd rather have him on the big team then Chipchura.

I still think that Pacioretty is about a season away from being a regular on the Habs, but he is definatly the first call up if a left winger goes down, With Laraque's durability they are going to have to carry a fifth right winger at all time, because you just don't know about Laraque's health, an he is useless against the teams with no Heavy weights, I think Lapierre an Latendresse are going to improve alot with the addition of Moen on there left wing, I think Spacek is going to have a great season playing along side Markov, Gorges is going to have Gill beside him, so that Gorges doesn't get run over every shift, an Mara and Hamrlik are going to be our shut down pairing..... The only real question mark is what shape is Carey Price going to be in a the beginning of the season........

This is my line-up:

Cammalleri - Gomez - Gionta
Kostitsyn - Plekanec - D'Agostini (the kid can really shake up a line, and these two need shaking)
Pacioretty (he's the goal scorer on this line) - Lapierre - Latendresse
Moen - Metropolit/Stewart (can Greg play center? I sure hope so) - Laraque

Unfortunately, Chipchura is yet again going to be brought up to the NHL only to disappoint. He does not have the speed the Habs need: we have to trade this kid before his career is over. Also, as much as I like Sergei K., I just don't trust him. Not at the beginning of the season: let him grow a pair of blue balls about playing in the NHL and let Plekanec find his legs again and the second line will be complete so long as Andrei keeps up his consistent play (which he should). Where will D'Agostini go? Anywhere between the AHL and the fourth line. As far as I'm concerned, Sergei's return should coincide with somebody's injury, hah.

We may need to let some of these kids during the trade deadline though. If we could grab some first round draft picks from teams desperate for young promising players, we'd score big in the draft next year. Chipchura, D'Agostini and Weber (or P.K. Subban, depending on how well they both do in the AHL this year) can go for all I care, they each have more interesting replacements (Metropolit, Kostitsyn and Subban/Weber).

Totally agree with your statements about our D-line: it actually looks pretty good. I trust Gorges any time and as much as I hate Hamrlik, I know he can play well. Markov will definitely have an easier time with Spacek than he did with Schneider, the old fart could hardly skate backwards.

yeah but you do realize that he had better linemates and wasn't on a team that had jacques martin coaching them, who doesn't play the up-tempo style that will allow cammalleri to get to 39 goals this year and will have all the moronic montreal faithful booing him by the end of the year along with gomez and gionta?
