Habs Ink Jaroslav Spacek

MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of defenceman Jaroslav Spacek to a three-year contract (2009-10 to 2011-12).

Last season, Spacek, 35, led the Buffalo Sabres defencemen in scoring with 45 points in 80 games (8 goals, 37 assists). He registered 38 penalty minutes, maintained a +2 differential and an average time of ice of 22:16 mins.

The Rokycany, Czech Republic native will be entering his 14th NHL season in 2009-10. He played in a total of 701 career regular season games in the NHL with Florida, Chicago, Edmonton, Columbus and Buffalo. He registered 303 points (73 goals, 230 assists), amassed 515 penalty minutes and a +25 differential.

The 5’11’’, 204-pound defenceman was a 5th round selection by the Panthers, 117th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Sabres as a free agent on July 5th, 2006.

Jeff Finger money (almost)

The ghost of John Ferguson Jr. made its way into Gainey somehow.

The way I look at this one, Bob Gainey replaced, Mathieu Schneider with Joroslav Spacek, a few years younger, not much thought... I feel he is a bit expensive for a fifth or sixth defencemen....... But not a terrible pick-up, a solid blue-liner that is a forty to fifty point man......

Spacek provides decent depth for the Montreal blueline, but I don't see him making a significant impact with the Canadiens. He didn't come cheap either. Not a horrendous signing, but definitely not a good one either.

add BELOW before average, he does nothing very well and got the advantage of being pretty much defenseman #1 on the Buffalo blueline that was decimated with injuries.

the fact that this signing is GUARANTEED no matter if Spacek retires is mind boggling.
