Greg Zanon Dealt to Boston for Steven Kampfer

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Greg Zanon from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenseman Steven Kampfer.

Now in his sixth full NHL season, Greg Zanon has skated in 432 NHL games with the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild and registered 11 goals and 43 assists for 54 points. The 6’0, 205-pound native of Barnaby, BC has also appeared in 11 postseason contests where he compiled four assists. This season, he had 2-4=6 totals in 39 games for Minnesota.

Last year, Zanon ranked second overall in the NHL in blocked shots with 212 in 82 games. His best season statistically came in 2009-10 after he notched 2-13=15 totals in 81 games. He was originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round (156th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Steven Kampfer was acquired by the Bruins on March 2, 2010 from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2010 fourth round draft pick. In his career, Kampfer has skated in 48 NHL games (all with the Bruins) with 5-5=10 totals. This season, Kampfer appeared in 10 NHL games with the Bruins and had two assists.

He's a stay-at-home Dman. Soft though, not in Boston mould.

Zanon isn't a soft player at all. Don't get soft and doesn't fight mixed up.. he'll lay the body and block shots with his teeth

Good pick up, actually a perfect fit in Boston

I actually like this pickup. Kamfer shows terrific skating ability but he's pretty brutal in his own end.

Kampfer is horrible. I don't know much about Zanon since he's spent the majority of his career in the West, but if he can play solidly in his own end, then I'm completely fine with this trade.

A thanks to the Z man for his service here in Minnesota. Unfortunately, his play made him fall of favor here. The turnovers became exhausting. The breakout passes were a nightmare to watch, and the physical play has all but dried up.

He blocks a lot of shots, but the inconsistent physical play both on the rush and in front of his net will drive you nuts. Its tough to fault him given the amount of abuse he takes from blocking shots, but the point is still there.

When Boychuk returns, if Zanon can provide more than what Corvo has provided thus far defensively, then I can live with some inconsistancies.

Sounds like a mixed review here. Only thing to do is watch and see how he does. I will agree though, for how good of a skater Kampfer could be, he wasn't living up to his end of the bargain.

There is no doubt in the world that Zanon will provide A LOT more defensively than Corvo.

After all, when Corvo is in his own end it's called "adventures in defense with Joe Corvo."

And If I see Corvo cower away from another hit I'm going to throw something at the wall next to my tv.
