Can somebody help me out here? TSN keeps blabbing about how the Oilers appear to be frontrunners in the Marian Hossa sweepstakes, or at the very least in the running. Apparanty they've offered close to 9 million/year.
But last time I checked the Oilers salary cap was sitting around 47-49 million bucks for next season. How the hell do they think they can can squeeze Hossa in without dumping some of their larger salaries? Is anyone else hearing these Oiler/Hossa rumours from other sources? It just doesn't add up to me....

Thanks boys - I know they'd try to find a way to make room, but I was just wondering if these rumours/reports had been heard from other sources. I've only heard it from TSN so far, and their emphasis to report on the Canadian teams always has me a little leary once they start talking about trades and rumors.
The other part of me is trying to think of a contract the Oilers would want to move in order to make room for Hossa's massive salary - Roloson, Souray, Cole, Vishnovsky? Certainly none of the kids.... Gotta love the cap.

Russian paperwork in Artyukhin's way The co-agent for Russian freight train Evgeny Artyukhin said Tuesday that his client is in the process of signing a two-year, $1.9-million contract (NHL rules prevented him from doing that until Tuesday). But even if he signs the deal that will pay $900,000 next season, paperwork needed from Russia can hold up the process. Todd Diamond said the NHL is requiring all players coming from Russia to provide a note from the Russian league now called the Continental Hockey League (thanks for the reminder, Geografer, I'm a little scattered, today) that proves the player is no longer under contract to a Russian team. Mark Gandler, Artyukhin's other agent, said he has asked Artyukhin to send him his prior contract with Russia's Central Army team to prove it has expired. "If I get a copy of the contract tomorrow, then it will get done tomorrow," Gandler said. "If not, it will take another few days to get the note." Hmm, I'm sure they'll be a few of those Hump. I was kinda surprised we didn't see the Flames officially sign Giordano who was in a similar situation last season. I hope they're not having the same problem.
Russian Freight Train, wicked nickname. |
