Former 3-time Stanley Cup-winning player Mike Keane set to retire

Quote:
Mike Keane and the Manitoba Moose have elected to part ways and the player, most recently captain of the Moose for the past five years and a three-time Stanley Cup champion, will officially announce his retirement sometime down the road.

Keane was a member of the 1992-1993 Habs, the 1995-96 Colorado Avalanche, and the 1998-1999 Dallas Stars.

Good luck to Mike.

Dam!, he will be missed!

I was hoping he would end his career on an NHL team.

43 years old and the guy was still going strong in the AHL. He'll be a big loss for the Moose.

A great career by a man who played the game right. A good guy off the ice too.

Never understood why Rejean Houle felt the need to throw away Captain Keane in the Roy deal. A real lightweight warrior who's scraps with Guerin and Walker were some unbeleiveable slug fests.

A great leader and a hell of a middleweight. He did a good job leading the Moose and I can imagine how great it must have been for the Canucks to have a guy like Keane mentoring their young prospects.

I don't think he has ever played on any team that I liked, but I still have a ton of respect for that guy. I actually admire the fact that he didn't end his career with an NHL team. He went "old-school" and finished in the AHL, which I remember being a bit more common than nowadays. He stuck with the game, no matter what the level. I've never been a pro athlete, but the decision to go to Manitoba and bring his experience/approach/guidance to that club for 5 seasons seems damn admirable.

Best of luck to Keane & family.

I like the guy myself but he sure is sensitive about his lack of follicles.

Mike Keane was a warrior. Very Shayne Corson-like. Here's some of his finer work with the hands.

KEANE vs WALKER

KEANE vs BARNABY

KEANE vs GUERIN

Always admired Keane, but especially the last 4 or 5 years - here's a guy who hasn't played an NHL game since 2004, yet he continued to play in his home city of Winnipeg in the AHL for years afterward, purely for the love of the game. I bet most fans didn't even know he was still actively playing, but he's been doing it in relative obscurity for years now!

You gotta love and respect that - players like Keane represent everything great about this fantastic sport, both on and off the ice. Enjoy retirement Mike, you've earned every bit of it, and thanks for all the terrific scraps!

Class act throughout his career, and was unfortunately run out of Montreal for rightly pointing out why "he didn't see why it was a big deal that he didn't speak french," when he was captain of the franchise.

Consummate professional, warrior, hard nosed player. All terms that can be used to describe Keane. He was and remains one of my favorite all time players and almost EVERYONE of his fights are of the highlight reel of variety. He didn't go often, but he made them count when he did.... Enjoy your retirement Mr Keane, you provided this poster with a ton of great memories.
