Bold.

I hope they don't match. Flyers need a Pronger replacement bad.

I agree. He's a cornerstone player that you can built around in every aspect.

From a Preds perspective, this sucks donkey balls, but I see your point as well. The defense first system is one of those that works, and works with just about any cast. The big issue, is that you need a couple of upper-middle or top end players to cash in from time to time. I don't see that in their forward cast, and losing Ryan Suter means they are going to be VERY hard pressed to get that from anyone else on the blue liner if they lose Weber as well. As much as I wouldn't want to overpay for a player, Weber is one of those guys to do it for, and the Preds have plenty of cap space for it.... so I'd match if I were them.

I agree,If I am Nashville I don't let him walk. Think the league will look at a contract that is too out of whack. If Im Nashville I would suck it up for a year because you can't trade him then put him on the market if you can't afford him or he doesn't want to stay. I think they would be able to get plenty on the open market and they could also make sure Philly NEVER gets him.

I think it's obvious Weber doesn't want to be in Nashville....

So imagine how pissed he will be if Nash matches and he's a pred for life

My guess is they'll match and he'll immediately demand a trade.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

another thing to think about...if weber hadn't signed the offer sheet, he could have walked after this season. now that he signed it, he could very well be in a place for the rest of his career that he really doesn't seem interested in being at as well.

"According to Dreger, the deal may be structured in a way that would prevent a small-market club like Nashville from matching the offer, by way of $26 million in signing bonuses between now and July 1, 2013. That may be tough for Nashville to match, since they would be forking over nearly 16 percent of their entire franchise’s net worth ($163 million in 2011 according to Forbes magazine) in one calendar year."

No competent business person is putting 16% of their entire net worth into one player. Although in this case it could be said that Shea is the face and cornerstone of the franchise and hence it may be worth it to them.

The other part of things that I need to be clearer on is that apparently a trade can be struck between the teams in this week-long window. Why the Flyers would do this is beyond me since Weber agreed to a deal and Nashville knows he wants to leave...so I don't see the Preds having any leverage beyond F-You, we are keeping him, we don't care if he is unhappy.

if the Preds decline, then the next big question is who will the Flyers trade him to next summer...

This is absurd.

Shea is a good player but he's not Bobby Orr for cripes sake.

$26 million the first year is obviously front loading and just a way for a team to lock up a good player before the CBA goes down the sh1tter, some players will benefit, Suter, Parise, Matt Carle, and a few others while most of the NHL players will be corn holed in the next couple of months by a new CBA that benefits the owners a lot more than the players.

What a clusterfock.

It's true Mike, he's not Bobby Orr but I would submit that a player's worth is also measured by how he will fit into the team, what his presence does for the team.

And in this case he is exactly what Philly needs and so they are willing to pay him to be that ultimate missing piece. They are also keeping him from rivals although you can't really quantify that in dollars.

If the Preds can somehow work out a trade with them, who would the Flyers be willing to give up (besides draft picks)?
