Flyers Sign Peter Forsberg

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’1”, 205-pound unrestricted free agent center Peter Forsberg to a two-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke.

"Peter Forsberg is one of the best players in the game,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “We signed him knowing that he puts us over the cap and we will have to trade some guys now."

Forsberg, 32, recorded 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points and 88 penalty minutes in 33 regular season games for MODO Hockey Ornskoldsvik in Sweden. His 39 points were second on the team (tied for eighth in the league). He also was a member of the Swedish National Team at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, posting three points (1G,2A) in four games.

A native of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, Forsberg registered 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points and 30 penalty minutes in 39 regular season games for the Colorado Avalanche during the 2003-04 season. He missed the majority of the 2003-04 season recovering from groin (against Calgary on October 28, 2003) and hip (against Vancouver on February 16, 2004) injuries.

After the 2002-03 season, Forsberg won the Art Ross Trophy as “the player who leads the league in scoring points at the end of the regular season” (106 points) and the Hart Memorial Trophy as “the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team” and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team. A five-time NHL All-Star (1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2003), Forsberg has also won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year (1995) and been named to the NHL All-Rookie Team (1995) and to the NHL First All-Star Team two additional times (1998 and 1999). Twice, he led the NHL in playoff scoring (24 points in 1999 and 27 points in 2002).

Over parts of 10 NHL seasons (from 1994-95 through 2003-04) with the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado, Forsberg has recorded 216 goals and 525 assists for 741 points and 544 penalty minutes in 580 regular season games. He was a member of both Avalanche Stanley Cup Championship teams (1996 and 2001). He represented Sweden at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, 1996 World Cup of Hockey, 1998 World Championships, 1998 Winter Olympic Games, 2003 World Championships and 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Forsberg is fourth on the NHL’s All-Time List for highest assists-per-game average in a career (.905 – 525 assists in 580 games played).

He was originally drafted by the Flyers in the first round (sixth overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. His rights were traded by the Flyers, along with Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, a first round pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, $15,000,000 and future considerations in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, to Quebec in exchange for the rights to Eric Lindros on June 30, 1992.

You stupid fuk, Naslund signed a 3 year deal with the NUCKS..TODAY, then again you wouldn't get that kind of information in your "avalanche newsletter".

Btw, it really wouldn't be sweet. I'd rather have Forsberg anyday.

Roenick Soon to Be a KING???

Flyers land Forsberg

TSN.ca Staff

8/3/2005 6:47:51 PM

Peter Forsberg is going back where he started. TSN has learned that the Philadelphia Flyers have signed Forsberg to a two-year deal worth $10.7 million.

Forsberg will get $5.7 million in the first year of the deal and $5.0 in the second year.

The aquisition of Forsberg puts the Flyers over the NHL's salary cap, but GM Bob Clarke expects to make a trade within the next two days to get back under the league's financial limit.

The player most likely to go is veteran Jeremy Roenick, with NHL sources suggesting he is about to be moved to the L.A. Kings.

Forsberg was orginally drafted by the Flyers, 6th overall, in 1991. He was then traded to the Quebec Nordiques in the Eric Lindros deal in 1992 before ever playing a game with Philadelphia.

Forsberg has 741 points in 580 NHL games. He was considered the top forward available in this off-season's free agent crop.

I don't believe it yet until I see it on their website. Not that it couldn't happen in terms of them signing him, but as of yesterday they were at around $37 million of cap money and the math would allow this deal. I would be stoked if it goes down, but they would have to trade someone else who makes serious coin.

Holy crap!

I didn't even get enough time to reply fast enough to turn on the TV and see this. What's next, Lindros in Philly? I need a drink!
