Flyers Sign Kimmo Timonen to One-Year Contract Extension
The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to terms with D Kimmo Timonen on a one-year contract extension, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. The extension keeps Timonen with the Flyers through the 2013-14 season.
“We are pleased to announce that we have signed Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension,” Holmgren said. “Kimmo’s presence on the ice for us and in our locker room is invaluable. We look forward to him continuing his all-around play for us.” Timonen, 37 (3/18/1975), is currently in his 14th NHL season and his sixth with the Flyers. He was acquired along with Scott Hartnell in a trade with Nashville on June 18, 2007 in exchange for a first-round pick in that year’s draft. Over the course of 407 games with the Flyers, Timonen has posted 211 points on 28 goals and 183 assists, and has gathered a plus-38 rating along with 244 penalty minutes. Originally a 10th-round selection (250th overall) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Timonen did not make his NHL debut until 1998 with the Predators. He has appeared in 980 NHL games in his 14 years with the Flyers and Nashville, scoring 107 goals and adding 405 assists for 512 points. Last edited by chilly666; 02-07-2013 at 06:38 PM. |

I like the move. Kimmo isn't what he used to be but he's a good guy to have in relatively young dressing room and he and Schenn have been good together and I think this move also has that in mind a little bit too to help keep Schenn progressing as he's played very well this year. Also, teams tend to target Kimmo a lot so Schenn's good to have there to say something if any lines are crossed or potentially crossed. (Reasons for the LeCavlier fight)

The price is high but worth it in terms of the stability that he provides as well as him being one of the top guys out there you would want to groom a young defensive corps.

His pay is less than his cap hit this year. Won't play into the over 35 contracts. He would have been the best availible dman. Locking him up is a good thing.

I'm shocked to read that people are happy with this. Signing him to one more year I can live with, giving him 6 million should cost Homer his job. The cap is going down, there are other top UFA's hitting the market that this money could have been spent on to help this club long term. Maybe he is one of the best Dman available even though he is a 114 years old and getting slow however this was a easy way out. Why not use that money to attract a big time forward and then use that as leverage to make a trade for something else the team may need.
Don't mind that he's back but absolutely hate the fact they just gave him 6 million dollars. His last contract was structured the way it was for a reason. His salary went down with his age increase and productivity decline which by all accounts should give the Flyers the ability to extend him for a lower amount. Loyality aside this is a terrible extenson at that price, now instead of having a ton of cap room in July to try and make a huge splash we'll be sitting on the outside looking in while other teams in our group get stronger. |

his cap hit is over $6M for this season, so his hit will actually go down next season

Somebody cheaper then 6 million a year for a 37 year old dman on the heavy decline.
Use that money and chase one of the top UFA forwards that may be available then make a trade with another piece from the exsisting forwards and get a dman to replace him. Let's be honest, he is replaceable. This isn't the Timo of 2005, hence why is current deal was structured the way it was. To put it in retrospect, we just paid him the same amount Zdeno Chara makes. He will be in the top 15 for highest paid dman next season. Can anyone honestly tell me they think he is worthy of that? I'll guarantee you come July there are going to be people fuming over the fact Homer can't make a serious run at players we would love to have because they just spent double of what Timo is worth. Like I said, had it been a reduced salary in the ballpark of 3 million this would be fine but not at this price. It's an insane salary for the player he is today. |
