Flyers Sign James van Riemsdyk to Six-Year Extension

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed LW James van Riemsdyk to a multi-year contract extension, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

van Riemsdyk, 22 (5-4-1989), scored 21 goals and added 19 assists for 40 points in 75 regular season games for the Flyers last season. He went on to score seven goals in 11 playoff games during the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which tied for the team lead. In 153 career games for the Flyers, van Riemsdyk has posted 36 goals and added 39 assists for 75 points, along with 65 PIM and a plus-14 rating.

A 6-3, 200-lb native of Middletown, NJ, van Riemsdyk was selected by the Flyers in the first round (second overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Exactly. When JVR plays with an edge, he is much more effective. As long as he keeps up that style of play, this is a great move.

until he "parties up" too hard or doesn't do exactly what the Philly brass wants him to do will he remain a good deal.

It's not bad, but it still leaves the flyers with less then 200K total to play with. With injuries always bound to happen, it doesn't give the team much wiggle room.

Only 74.5 million less than Vick over the 6 years.

Great deal for the Flyers and JVR.

He's progressing along in terms of offense and asserting himself physically, and hopefully that progression keeps on going, because he can be something special if it does.

Mike Richards is only making 1.5 million more a season. Now compare each player, thoughts...

If JVR hits the next progression point, like Richards, talk about a bargain.

Richards went 34 points and 32 points before he exploded.

JVR 35 points and 40 points.

Imagine if JVR 30+ goals on the board the following year, and keeps adding to that the next years. Bargain would be a perfect tag for the contract then.

Big IF, but it's what the Flyers are banking on, IMO.

Cant remember if they resigned Giroux. If so then this deal just sweetens the Flyers core. Especially if Brayden Schenn hits his potential.

Giroux signed a three year extension during the season at 3.7.

Next: Braydon Coburn.

great signing. i really like this kid and hes showing major upside.

best part about him is he should be a lock for future USA teams.
