Flyers Sign Giroux to Three-Year Deal

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 5-11, 172-pound forward Claude Giroux to a multi-year contract extension, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

"We had this opportunity to do it with Claude and we're extremely happy to have this done," said Holmgren. "He's been a good player for us and we look forward to him becoming a better player over the course of the next few years."

"I'm really excited to be with the Flyers organization for three more years," said Giroux. "We are going to a very good team, hopefully for many years. This is a good group of guys and I am having a lot of fun right now."

Giroux, 22 (1/12/88), was selected by the Flyers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. In 15 games this season, he has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points to go along with a plus-2 rating. He currently leads the NHL with three shorthanded goals, and has also recorded three game-winning goals for the Flyers this season.

"We started talking at the start of the season," added Giroux. "I had a couple of options to look over and me and my lawyer talked about it and felt this was the best fit for me. We have a lot of good players on this team and I'm just trying to fit in. Hopefully, we can continue with our success."

Giroux has appeared in 141 games for the Flyers over parts of four seasons, including all 82 games in 2009-10. During that time, he has scored 32 goals and added 56 assists for 88 points.

Awesome signing, now just sign Leino and let that goof Carter walk. I'll never forgive that Sea Isle-skank banging f aggot for pasting Niemi right in the chest as he could have iced game 6 of the SCF. Worst 40-goal scorer ever.

I may be an occasional flyer basher but nothing to bash here. The kid is the real deal..actually think he is one of the most exciting players in the NHL when the puck is on his stick...

I don't know about 5 years. It was either this or a long term 10 year deal. After this extension is over he will still be a RFA. That way we still have a great chance to resign him. If it was 5 years it would have taken him to age 28 and he would be an UFA at age 28. Then it would be tougher to keep him. Homer basically delayed Girouxs big pay day 3 years. I'm fine with that.

I can't see the Flyers giving Carter that much money. I'm hoping they trade him away before the deadline.

this has to send a message to carter and his agent. and at this point, giroux is simply more valuable to the team. what does carter make now? i cant see him getting more than 5 mil. a year from the flyers.

i really hope the flyers end up signing giroux again long term. anywhere from 5-8 years would be awesome. slick hands, great vision, and he's really been stepping up this year. dude's a stud.
