Flyers Sign Eminger to One-Year Deal

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’2”, 212-pound defenseman Steve Eminger to a one-year contract, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“Steve is a young two-way defenseman that will fit in nicely with our group,” said Holmgren in making the announcement.

“I’m happy to get the deal worked out and excited about being part of the organization,” said Eminger. “I can’t wait for the start of the season to get things going.”

Eminger, 24, was acquired, along with a third round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, from the Washington Capitals in exchange for a first round pick in the 2008 Entry Draft on June 20, 2008. He posted two assists and eight penalty minutes in 20 regular season games for the Capitals this past season. He scored a goal in five playoff games during the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In 212 career regular season games over parts of five NHL seasons with Washington (2002-03 through 2007-08), Eminger has registered six goals and 37 assists for 43 points and 221 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Capitals in the first round (12th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Prior to joining the Capitals organization, Eminger played parts of four seasons with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, recording 29 goals and 106 assists for 135 points and 273 penalty minutes in 191 regular season games. He was a member of 2003 Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers and was named to the 2003 Memorial Cup Tournament All-Star Team. He was also named to the OHL Second All-Star Team following both the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.

A pretty big minus defenseman who doesn't produce a whole lot offensively (although he did put up as many points as Richards on their Kitchener team back in '02), isn't physical, and who was also behind Erskine on the depth chart. Can't say I'm too excited about this one.

u guys....tsk tsk...clueless sometimes...

I said in the draft post...

Well he only played about 20 games last season. He was drafted only 4 or 5 years ago. Team is 17-5-2 on the year with him in the lineup. And if you saw him play for Kitchener and WJC, he's shut down, puck moving and mobile. He's smart positionally. He doesn't have amazing speed or the hardest shot. But who knows. With a new start, on a better team, and he's healthy, could be your 2nd line dman for 10 more years.

This being said, defense normally take longer to develop, and if your thrown into a ****ty situation, on a ****ty team at the time (pre Ovechkin), your not going to be to turning any heads. He can eat 15-20 minutes a night, and not cost you a lot. Best thing about him, he's steady, and rarely makes mistakes.

Wasted trade. I for one don't think Eminger will be around for much more than the year he signed for. Still not happy about this one. I know its unfair...but Eminger is already my new whipping boy because of the way he was aquired. You don't give up a 1st round pick for a no-show...sorry..I don't care what people will say...this move was/is brutal.

PS....let's hope CatSmasher is the correct one between us 2.

Dont forget about that 3rd round pick we gave them, plus the first rounder. But you do know that we moved up in the draft with this pick didnt we? Isnt this trade one of the reasons we moved up into the draft and picked up our first rounder. It wasnt that bad of a deal, maybe you didnt hear about the pick we got PhlyerPhanatic?

We gave up the 27th overall pick for Eminger and a 3rd rounder. We never moved up in this deal. The deal we moved up to the 19th overall pick was with Columbus for Umberger. The amazing thing about the Eminger deal was the fact that the Flyers chose virtually the same type of player as him with their pick in the 3rd round. Seems odd if you ask me. The Flyers now have too many d-men in the system IMO. One could say you can never have enough defencemen...that may be true...but you could also say one can never have too many paper-weights.

Thanks man, had that **** mixed up a bit. I still dont think its that horrible since Eminger can jump right in and every other d-man really cant.
