Flyers sign Coburn to contract extension

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’5”, 220-pound defenseman Braydon Coburn to a multiple-year contract extension, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“Braydon is a good young defenseman that we believe will continue to get better,” said Holmgren in making the announcement.

"It feels good, absolutely,” said Coburn. “This really was not planned. The Flyers just contacted my agent and said that they were interested in getting a deal done right now and so that is what we did. I'm excited.”

Braydon Coburn was acquired by the Philadelphia Flyers from the Atlanta Thrashers last season. (Jack Cassidy)

Coburn, 22, has posted eight assists and 28 penalty minutes in 23 games for the Flyers this season. Over parts of the last two seasons, Coburn has recorded three goals and 12 assists for 15 points and 44 penalty minutes in 43 games for the Flyers. He has registered three goals and 17 assists for 20 points and 78 penalty minutes in 81 career regular season NHL games over the last three seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers and the Flyers. He was acquired by the Flyers from Atlanta in exchange for Alexei Zhitnik on February 24, 2007.

Over parts of three AHL seasons (2004-05 through 2006-07), he recorded seven goals and 31 assists for 38 points and 175 penalty minutes in 91 regular season games. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Coburn posted an assist and 36 penalty minutes in 18 playoff games as the Wolves advanced to the 2005 Calder Cup Finals (losing to the Philadelphia Phantoms).

Coburn was drafted by the Thrashers in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In five seasons with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (2000-01 through 2004-05), Coburn registered 29 goals and 102 assists for 131 points and 483 penalty minutes in 238 regular season games. He was named to the WHL West First All-Star Team following the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons and WHL Rookie of the Year for the 2001-02 season.

He should buy a different nose.

Him and R.J.'s nose bother the shiit out of me. At least we don't have Brindy's nose hanging around anymore, wait... whats the topic again??

Oh... Coburn, he's a solid, young, huge, and very speedy defenseman, great move by Holmgren.

I think this is a good move. He is fast as hell. I just wish he would play his size more.

They always talk about how great a skater and how fast he is. Well, with that ability along with being 6'5" 220 you'd think he'd be able to hit. Sure wish he'd take it more seriously and develop that aspect of his game. That being said, this is pretty reasonable at $2.6 mil over two years.

Coburn can definitely hit. And fight at that. For whatever reason he hasn't been showing that much at the NHL level.

I've seen one NHL Coburn fight, and that was against Michael Rupp, and he was KOed. I haven't seen anything else from him, has he had any real success in fighting???

Good signing on the Flyers part. Glad to see they reconized the trend these days and got him signed before season's end.

like coburn
like the signing.

he's young, and hasn't fought as much as i'd like from a big guy, nor has he done as well as i'd have expected in his fight. (although rupp is no sissy boy)

he does seem to alway be in the right place at the right time in the right gear.

he also does get right into the mix whenever there is a scrum i've noticed. i think with age and maturity his grit will develop.

They really stole a good young blueliner from the Thrashers. Good move to lock him up.

I know he was pretty tough in the WHL. He played with an edge most nights. I guess he doesn't feel as though he can do that in the NHL on a consistent basis.

As has been said earlier in this thread, it seems as if he doesn't know that he is 6'5" 220lbs... He hits somewhat well, but he can definitely use his size to his advantage some more. He seems a bit gun shy to drop the gloves again after what Rupp did to him, but I think eventually he'll move his eway back into the ring.
