Flyers Sign Biron to Two-Year Extension

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 6’3”, 175-pound goaltender Martin Biron to a two-year contract extension, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

“We are extremely pleased to get this done,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “Marty has come in and played well and we look for him to be a solid goaltender for us for the next two years.”

Biron, 29, has registered a 16-9-2 record, 3.01 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 29 games this season for the Buffalo Sabres and the Flyers. He has posted a 4-5-1 record, 2.96 GAA and .913 save percentage in 10 games for the Flyers. He was acquired by the Flyers from Buffalo in exchange for a second round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on February 27, 2007. In 19 games for the Sabres, he compiled a 12-4-1 record, 3.04 goals-against average and .899 save percentage.

Over parts of seven NHL seasons with Buffalo (1995-96 and 1998-99 to 2006-07) and the Flyers (2006-07), Biron has compiled a 138-120-30 record, 2.54 GAA, .910 save percentage and 18 shutouts in 310 career regular season games. He is second on the Sabres’ All-Time List in shutouts (18) and third in games played (300) and wins (134).

A native of Lac St. Charles, Quebec, Biron was originally drafted by the Sabres in the first round (16th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

Too bad he won't be on a winning team.

I don't know if I agree with that. The Flyers have the most money to spend on the FA market and have been very vocal that they will spend it. Plus they will have the first pick of the draft as well. Briere, Sourray, and the Russian kid #1 overall could put them in the playoffs next season IMO.

how can a goalie look good with that team in front of him? off season add some scoring, a real defenseman or two and we will be all set. As I have been saying at the end of every regular season in my lifetime "can't wait for next year"

because he let up enough weak goals that were in crucial times, i wouldn't say lost it for them, but def put a dent in the momentum.

They will be a playoff team next year.

I think the Flyers made the right decision here. He has looked solid for the Flyers, especially given how bad the rest of the team is.

Agreed. I hated getting rid of Biron, but I understood we had to. He's the ultimate team guy, and although he does let the occasional soft goal in, he makes some spectacular saves.
He'll be great for the locker room, he'll be great for PR, and he'll be a better goalie than the Flyers have had since Hextal was going (I always though Snow sucked and just had monsters in front of him to clear the net).

I wish Biron all the luck in the world, and I hope he helps turn the Flyers around. It's just not fun with them playing as poorly as they did this season.

great move by the flyers signing the guy, however if he's going to be a true flyer...

someone's got to show him how to fight

Well, Fridge is going to have some free time on his hands...Nah, nevermind, you just signed Biron for 2 years, you don't want his face broken so soon...

Just some good natured ripping.

I don't think we'll be seeing any Garth Snow v. Steve Shields type behavior from our teams anytime soon.
