Flyers Sign Arron Asham

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 5'11'', 205-pound free agent forward Arron Asham (AIR-ruhn, ASH-uhm) to a multi-year contract according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

"Arron is a hard-nosed aggressive winger that can play a lot of different roles for our hockey team," said Holmgren in making the announcement.

"I think it’s great," said Asham. "I've always wanted to play with the Flyers. I think their style of game suits my game to a tee. It's definitely going to be exciting to come here and wear the orange and black."

Asham, 30, recorded six goals and four assists for 10 points and 84 penalty minutes in 77 regular season games for the New Jersey Devils this past season and registered one assist and two penalty minutes in five playoff games.

A native of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Asham has posted 64 goals, 71 assists for 135 points and 537 penalty minutes in 498 regular season NHL games over nine seasons. In 23 career playoff games, he has registered one goal, three assists for four points and 22 penalty minutes.

Asham was originally drafted by Montreal in the third round (71st overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Wow, great pick up by the Flyers. Asham is going to look great in a Philly sweater.

Well so much for the Cote Asham battles we had last year. Good sign by the flyers.

I agree the Pens should have gotten him. He'd be better than Cooke.Though I'm not so sure this help Philly really. They got Cote,Downie,Boulerice..I mean get someone who can put the puck in the net..All that I can say is that the Flyers better brush up on their penalty kill next year because they're going to be on it alot....

Nice signing by the Flyers.

Hey Poile? Wake the hell up!

I'm glad to see Asham get signed. I hope he thrives and provides some extra grit to the lineup.

Good pick up by the Flyers. Asham is one of the toughest pound for pound guys in the NHL right now IMO.

ScottRasner 07-07-2008 12:51 PM

The tough just got tougher imo, Asham isnt a bad fighter nor do I think hes a bad skater. Great pick up.

Not a big surprise the Devils haven´t sign him. IMO he played much better for the Islanders.

JKidd 07-07-2008 12:59 PM

A couple times last year when I tuned into Devils games, he was pretty invisible out there. The Islander version was much more impressive, IMO.

In any event, like the signing from the Flyers. Get tougher, and get someone that can play the game, always a plus.

I'm sure more than a few of those penalties are going to be the result of some slick dives by Crosby.

Good signing but he was invsible last year. Far more exciting when he was an Islander.

chilly666 07-07-2008 01:17 PM
