Flyers Keeping Cote

According to the Flyers website, Holmgreen says that the Flyers are keeping Riley Cote and not sending him to the minors.

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...id=DL|PHI|home

Its the third to last question.

That's great, but they never play him, so why bother keeping him?

I guess so they can keep him incase they need him or are afraid he will be re-claimed on re-entry waivers if they go that route. Maybe they want him for next year? With Holmgreen as the GM, anything is possible.

I would rather see Cote in the AHL fighting then sitting in a press box the rest of the season.

He wouldn't be fighting in the AHL anyway, with Greg Gilbert around.

We play the Leafs on Sunday, and after how the last game between us went, it's safe to assume that if Cote isn't dressed (the most likely scenario) he wont play the rest of the year, barring a couple injuries that can't be immediately fixed via Phantoms call-ups.
I think that IF Cote wanted to play, even if it was in the AHL, he would be with the Phantoms right now. I imagine he likes hanging out with the guys (who all apparently love him) on the Flyers, taking flights all over North America and staying in high-class hotels, as opposed to riding the bus in the minors. While I would love to see him dropping the mitts anywhere, I cant knock his thought process. The organization loves him and what he brings, despite the fact that they feel we don't need it right now, and it seems that they are just trying to take care of him.

i do remember reading that someone would claim him on re-entry, but i think its more than that. first of all, the phantoms arent on the other side of the parking lot anymore. sending cote to the minors means moving his entire life to upstate new york. i also think the team probably likes having him around for practice, pregame skates, etc. everyone talks about how he's such a team guy, that doesnt end off the ice.

the first question and answer cracked me up

Q: Paul, what happened today?

Paul Holmgren: “Nothing happened

If he wants to stay up with the big club, let him. He deserves it.

And getting a sky booth to watch every Flyers game. And he could go out and party every night, cuz he knows he's not playing the next game.

Not a bad way to make a living. Dude's fukking set up.

I would rather see him playing and fighting (for the Flyers).

As a fight fan I hate this for the same reasons already stated.

I'm sure Riley is hating not playing too, but loving the perks of being with the NHL club rather than the AHL club.

Stupid, just stupid. At least give him a game or two here and there.

This is rediculous! I could understand them keeping him around if he at least played once in a while. But the guys only played like 12 games so far this year. I'm sure Cote doesn't want to let go of his NHL opportunity but he's smart enough to know he's potentially just ruining the rest of his career. It's hard enough to stay in game shape when you only practice let alone fighting shape. The longer he sits the harder it is going to be for him to play even in the AHL let Lone ever get another NHL opportunity. I won't be surprised to see him end up in Russia just like Simon, Verot, Gratton, Sugden and so on. Funny how the US wanted Russian style of hockey and now Russia seems to now want the old style of US hockey.

Not true. It's just one team that endorses that style of hockey, and the league hates it.

Never realized that. Do all those guys play for the same team? If so I wonder how that teams attendance is compared to the rest of the league.
