Best of luck to Gagne, some incredible memories of him here in Philly.
Clear cap dump move, the biggest return in this trade is the cap space, but is quite nice to have all this toughness on the squad, quite a solid blue line as well.

I almost want to say that this works out for Philly more. Matt Walker is imo a solid physical defenceman, aswell as a great fighter, a rarity and his toughness was badly badly needed in tampa. He really rounds out Philly and they are gonna be fun to watch. Gagne, talented as he maybe, is a band-aid. He's got talent, but he has a hell of a salary, is inconsistant, and really doesn't bring something that Tampa doesn't already have (and Walker does). If Tampa manages to make the playoffs, which i don't think they will, then this could be huge for them. Until then, i'd rather be philly here. But don't get me wrong, this isn't necesarily a bad move by Steve Y. Adding someone as talented as Gagne will always be good in some form. Maybe Tampa can put someone else on the trading block now? Or hell, Yzerman could just turn around and trade Gagne to another team.

Yzerman's moves as GM are not really surprising. It's not just that he learned the trade from Holland and is influenced by him, but he recognizes that the game has changed, too. I'm as bothered by the Wings lack of toughness as anyone, but other teams don't make them pay.
Teams don't dress enforcers against the Wings, and even seem to play less physical against them in general. I would think that running the stars and trying to push the team around would be a good strategy, but I rarely see it. Anaheim plays the Wings pretty tough, and they've had a lot of success versus the Wings. Other teams should follow the Ducks lead, but they don't. It sure seems like teams don't [b]need[/B to be tough anymore, which is pretty depressing. |

I am well aware this was a salary dump by the Flyers, and Gagne with his hefty price tag is incredibly injury prone and likely has his best year behind him even though he's still only 30. But he can still be a pretty big impact player on offense if he can ever find a way to stay healthy. Adding him to the Lightning makes their already solid offense significantly more dangerous.
I know giving up Walker, who I like a lot, leaves Tampa desperately in need of a physical presence, but this is still a great trade for Tampa Bay. I'm really surprised the Flyers didn't get any better offers.

Is Wrecker still Avail haven't checked the Trans. lately, Too bad had to get rid of Gagne Walker pretty tough kid, But i am also starting to wonder are the Flyer's really this afraid of the Boogey man the only 1 that could give him a decent go is Shelley and i don't give him much of a chance. Maybe 70's Hockey again which I'm all for the only prob for the Flyer's is half of these guy's will dress and if they do there will be a ton of PP's for the other club and for the thing you dont have in net thats a prob
