Flyers' Carcillo Suspended One Game

The NHL has suspended Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Carcillo one game and fined coach John Stevens $10,000 for his actions at the end of Wednesday night’s Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against Pittsburgh, a game won by the Penguins, 4-1.

Carcillo got involved with the Penguins’ Max Talbot during a faceoff with seven seconds left in the game. Carcillo appeared to use the butt-end of his stick to strike Talbot in the head at the end of the regulation time. Talbot did not sustain an injury and no penalty was assessed.

"We had a conference call Monday with the General Managers and Coaches of playoff teams and told them explicitly we would not tolerate attempts by clubs to 'send a message' late in a game when the outcome had been determined," said Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Executive Vice Presidents of Hockey Operations. "Organizations – players and coaches – will be held accountable for such actions."

The Flyers acquired Carcillo, 24, at the trade deadline in exchange for Scottie Upshall and a 2011 second round draft pick. He scored 3 goals and 11 assists in 74 games this season, picking up 254 penalty minutes. He will miss Friday's Game 2 between the Flyers and Penguins in Pittsburgh.

yea its a joke, i saw the video of the so called butt end, and it was not a butt end or anything near that nature. the funny thing is sean avery hits tim thomas in the back of the head and the whole world saw it and there was no penalty called no injury and no meeting with mr campbell. Pens fans whined and whined about this so called butt end, it was just a gloved shot

It just keeps getting better for the Flyers. Next game they'll have to find someone else to help them fill the penalty box. I hope they do much better in game 2 cuz game 1 was a stinker. I was worried about this matchup and now we see why.

The league got it right on this one. These kind of incidents can and should not be tolerated. Whats next? A two hander to the throat? Should we let that go? A clear message has been sent to the players "NO STICK WORK!!!" This idiot only has himself to blame.*

I don't care what team you're a fan of, there is no way to justify this crap by the league. I don't think this play deserved 2 minutes, let alone anything beyond that. This is one of the most pointless rulings the league has ever made in my opinion, and they've made quite a few. They've already almost completely removed the risk of games getting out of hand because of their automatic suspension for instigating in the last 5 minutes. They're that scared of a little pushing and shoving at the end of the game that they're going to suspend Carcillo essentially for being on the ice and taking a face off? He didn't butt-end Talbot. He barely freakin' touched him! What a f*cking disgraceful decision...

If you don't want teams "sending messages" that they won't be as easy to play against in the next game of the series, why bother even having playoff series? Why not just let a single game decide who advances? Or why not create a round robin format so teams won't start to dislike one another from playing each other multiple games in a row? And since faceoffs late in a game provide such a perfect opportunity to "send a message", why even have them? For the entire third period, I think the referee should just throw the puck into a random corner after a stoppage in play and let all of the players chase after it.

Any of that makes much more sense to me than suspending Carcillo.

Word is Philly was going to make a few lineup changes, so Sibisa may have played over Carcillo anyways.

I actually agree with the suspension. Carcillo should have just droped the gloves and pummeled Talbot. Its kind of dumb what he did based on all the talk of stiffer calls on heads shots, why would he even motion a stick to a guys head that late in the game?
